Minor Paint Issue on Laser Weld (Roof)
Hey guys, I've had my car for about a week, just noticed this minor paint defect in the laser weld section of the roof. It looks like the paint bubbled then GM or someone tried poking it to make it go away. Pardon the dirty car.
Does anyone know what will need to be done to correct the paint defect? Hmm I wonder if it's craters or air entrapment like outlined here? Or could it be solvent pop? http://www.paintforcars.com/blog/com...pening-part-1/

Grind, sand, prime, sand some more and then paint.

Any idea how big of an area of paint they would need remove to correct this defect? I'm most concerned about quality of work. This is a tiny defect, I don't want to have the work performed by a shop that's going to make it look worse. Also being metallic paint I have concerns about blending.

The issue is it looks like the metal is exposed so it will start to rust so you have to do something on it.

Yeah I'll be taking it in to the dealership after the weekend to get a body shop lined up to fix it. I'm washing it tomorrow, hopefully it's the only defect I find.

I'd leave it alone unless part of the panel underneath is exposed. Don't you normally have to repaint the whole panel with metallic paint? This would be a large area since it wraps around right? And I would never go with a dealer paint shop at least not in my experience. There's only one, maybe two shops, in all of Houston that I think I'd let touch my car's paint. I just don't think it'd be worth the trouble unless there really is an exposed portion that paint isn't covering

Don't touch it, the dealer should have noticed that before delivery. That's more then a minor issue since they'll have to paint the complete roof, can't blend that.

I'd hate for them to fix a problem and create a couple new things like say a run, bubble, haze, swirl or some other artifact. Best of luck op on what you decide. |

Under closer inspection it looks like the issue is in the clear. I do not not want my entire roof repainted for the reasons stated.
The dealer is 7 hours away, can't really raise hell.

Since it looks small and you only just found it get some dr.colorchip or similar and reduce the issue to where you can't see it.
Your car will get chips and what not when driving so it may of happened from something hitting it when driving. Either Way since you said you are far from the dealer and do not want the whole roof repainted id just touch it up. |

Yeah I'm thinking I want to go the touch up route. However I'm going to get in touch with the local dealer and see if the local body shop could touch it up. They're going to be more skilled than I am.

I followed this guy's advice when touching up a chip in my '69 camaro. Did it myself by following his steps. Even I have trouble finding the chip sometimes. Yours is in a bit of a tricky area, but it looks small. This might work well for you.

Extremely minor avoid painting any big sections if you can will likely open a can of worms.
Good luck
