No seriously, this may look excessive on the face of it, but once you see exactly what kind of threat this suspect was posing to the community around him you realize this police action was completely justified. Think about this, the suspect was walking around with a .30-30 rifle. That rifle has a much more effective range than the handguns the officers carry. I don't know if this department has many officers with AR-15's in their cars, but let's just assume they don't. What else are they going to do? Get close enough to use mace, pepper spray, or their tasers? The suspect could easily take any approaching officer out before any of those options are even remotely feasible. Not to mention the officer that was slowly pacing the suspect was already in mortal danger without even realizing it. The officer that ran him down made a split second decision to catch the suspect off-guard with a surprise action that he probably never even saw coming. More than likely the officer saved lives and should be commended for his quick actions, which ultimately lead to the suspect not dying. So yeah, it may have looked bad, but everyone came away from it alive. I'd say that's a job well done in my book.

Little more to the left and we could have avoided court costs.

Yes. A head shot from his patrol carbine was the first other way to handle it that comes to mind.

While it was unconventional, the suspect was disarmed and subdued with little risk to the officers and anyone else.

In my eyes that officer is a hero who knows what would of happened if he reached the intersection or the shopping center that parking lot goes with hopefully the officer wasn't hurt in the crash with the brick wall.
