Question Tire Age - When Should You Replace Them?

I tried searching but could not locate the answer.

2010 2SS/RS, factory Pirelli PZero's with about 11,000 miles on them, still showing plenty of meat. The car sits in a garage so they do not appear to have any dry rot or cracks etc.

With that said, is there a rule of thumb when tires should be replaced due to age? Am I good for a few more years?

I say 7-10 years then you can feel the tire losing its performance.
However my friend works for Porsche and he said there is no real answer just variables.

Here is a article to help

I was told not to use tires once they are older than 5 years, which is in line with that TireRack article. In your case, you'd likely improve the handling and perhaps the comfort by replacing them (since tires harden in time), but it's likely still not dangerous to use them by any means.

I guess there's so many variables to this question, but what you listed makes sense. Thanks for the replies!!

Be sure to check the manufacture date code on the tire.

I had a pair of tires from 1998 manufacture date.. they were going pretty bald but still solid, no cracks/splits/rot... I swapped them out last spring 2014 for my pair or 2003 Nitto drag radials.. those grip so nicely.

I do have some cracks on my front tires, Nitto nt450's.. those were around the same time in 2003... so I'm keeping an eye on them.. tread is still good.

I just drive on clear/nice days.. no rain.

So sounds like you keep them clean and lubed up, you shouldn't have 2nd thoughts for a while vs major abuse/neglect, letting them sit in the sun, never applying tire shine.

Well, this isn't professional advice - I'm just a guy with an old car with old tires.
