Wow, that's awesome. Props to Dodge! I think this is a good day to be a muscle car enthusiast. This will put a dent in GT500 and ZL1 sales...

I'm waiting to see what GM comes up with for the C6. And the new ZL1. If they don't step up their game I'm probably gonna throw my money at dodge.
By the way, anyone see the pics of the new ford GT350R ? Looks and sounds pretty mean. No one knows exactly what's under the hood. I read it was some variation of their 5.0 litter engine. |

Jokingly I would say the GT500 isn't produced anymore so I don't think 707 is enough to time travel and steal sales. But in reality MOST GT500 buyers and ZL1 buyers are Ford and Chevy guys. Sure, a few people might cross shop the HellCat with a ZL1, but most buyers are probably going to be the guys that already own 392s, or have been Challenger fans for awhile and just now found a reason to jump. These cars aren't around to break sales records...just satisfy the void in our souls where the little kid still runs around vroom vrooming everywhere he goes.

These HP wars are great. But with the technology going into these cars, ontop of the HP wars, the prices are getting away from the average joe. Therefore, I would like to see future cars contain better base DNA, somthing that will support future HP and handling upgrades. Then the manufactures should get more involved in the aftermarket offering more in the way of over the counter upgrades.

20% down is 12k Leaving a 48k note. At my credit union you can get up to 90 month loans for under 5% (pretty sure of the 5%). Payments ~ $630/mo I know plenty of working average joes who drive 60k King Ranch Fords and Denali GMCs etc. It is all in what you really want If you make 40k/year - you could drive this car if you really wanted. |

I'm not too sure the average person making 40k can drive one of these....
Most people have families, Responsibilities, housing etc...and a 90 month loan at 5%...are you high? The GT and SS are the "blue collar" cars...always have been...these top end models costing significantly more is nothing new. I'm incredibly fortunate to be able to own one (even it's cheap at 56 compared to some optioned out models) because I finished school with super low debt, landed a great job, and live somewhere I can own a nice home for 360 dollars a month. Joe Dad with 2 kids, a house, and 40k a year isn't swinging a 60k dollar toy.

I would guess the average 'Murican who makes $40k a year doesn't have $12k of disposable income to plop down on a car. There's guys I work with that call me crazy for driving such a nice car and we all make $80-$130k per year. They don't understand how I do it with a wife and kid at home. My house payment is only $1k though. If I still lived in San Diego I wouldn't have the ZL1. My house payment would be 2.5-3x what it is now.

I wouldn't put a lot faith in jalopnik getting the price of 59,900. It would be awesome and maybe it is true. But I would wait for official numbers from Dodge. It's possible that it will be similar to GT500 packaging. Example, track pack was extra and a fully optioned GT500 coupe was 67,000 (not counting the glass roof) even tho base price was 55k. I'm am guessing there will be a base around 60-62 and just about all of them will be optioned out to 70-75. Still a great price for that kind of power.
As far as average Joe affording cars these days, I think the prices are out of reach. Anything longer than a 60 month loan is crazy in my opinion. If you can't pay it off in 5 years, it's out of your price range. You're upside down the entire loan and would be up a creek if life forced you to sell it early in an emergency.

I agree with the second part. If these cars were more affordable there would be more of them. In turn it would take away some of the uniqueness, which like it or not is part of what you are paying for in a 55-65,000 dollar Mustang or Camaro.
I could probably get into a debate over the affordability of an entry level GT, or a goddamn truck for that matter, but I won't.
