With that being said your lucky you dont have a ticket or anything to deal with. I would need to see pictures before i would say go though the insurance or not. I recomend you go to a body shop. Get a quote (which should be free). If the damage exceeds 1,000. Then go with the insurance. Anything less and your better off paying for it yourself because your rate will go up if you go with the insurance.
That's a weird assumption to make. Hitting a car would cause way more damage and higher. I bet it was a retread off a semi truck. Sorry OP. Repaint won't be cheap. Call your insurance.

sorry about the damage, doesn't matter how it happened. USe the quote to determine how or when to get it fixed.

Something got kicked out by another vehicle and two scenarios: 1) As it slid at an angle to the direction of travel it hit his car. From his point of view it seemed like he ran into it, because whatever it was was low and out of his line of sight. 2) something relatively long and low was run over by his front tire. It got kicked up into the side of the car because it was laying at an angle, part of it was under the car and part of it was to the side. Running it over made it bounce up.

There's no need to belittle the guy over it, or try to prove it didn't happen. Jeez you guys.

I know, like I said before it's happened to me with a tree limb. Like I said I have seen some strange things happen and cause damage while driving, and I have been driving 40 years.

When I drove for a job I found out first-hand, that yes, you can turn a vehicle, collide with something, and only damage the side of your vehicle. That goddam post should have watched where it was going!

That sucks! I am sorry to hear it.

Pretty much the same damage happened to me a few months back. I was driving on a 2 lane road in the left lane. A car was in the right but several cars ahead of me. Anyways, I heard a Bang, it didn't feel like I ran anything over but when I got home and had pretty much same damage as you do. Body shop quoted me $1500 so I just turned it in to insurance and got it fixed. The Insurance said it sounded like the car in the right lane probably hit something and knocked it into me.

Now I am super cautious and always try to avoid cars close to me.

Good thing was the body shop I used got it back to me within 3 days and was good as new.

Good luck!

You have insurance for a reason, and that will probably go under comprehensive, not collision.

I wouldn't turn that in, It's a collision loss, you'll have a deductible and a claim record with your insurance company. You have a small repair and a door refinish, plus a blend on the fender and 1/4 panel if the painter feels the need to Blend the clear.

Why not? This thread sets up the "no fault" story.
