My company retired me in 2009 after 32 years, it was not my choice.. I looked for engineering work until I was diagnosed with cancer in late 2010. Since then I have just been enjoying my life. Mainly driving our Camaro whenever possible.0

I've been going to school on displaced worker funding. I've always pulled my own weight since I was a teenager, and taking government funds didn't sit real well with me at first. Then I thought about all the taxes I've paid throughout my working life, including 35 years of paying into the Ponzi scheme that is social security. Money I am quite certain I know I'll never see a dime of again. So that makes it a little more palatable. Prior to this latest adventure I was quite happily working for a publishing house. Problem is, people aren't buying books anymore. Have you seen a bookstore lately? Get a good look, they're disappearing fast.

I am a union plumber, after my apprenticeship I was laid off (I saw the writing on the wall). I got laid off about a week after I had gotten engaged. I have an apartment that i have a mortgage and maintenance bill on (it's a co-op). I was out of work for 10 1/2 months with the union. I had picked up a job working for a gym equipment refurbishment company. The owner was a POS. I had to chase him everyweek. The job started 5 mins from home and he moved further out. I told him I would come along until he offered Me an extra 100 buck for gas each week (my jeep was a pig on gas). While I was working for him I went back to school and finished my degree in criminal justice. I quit that job because the owner was trying to d*ck me out of money. I went back to work about a month after that. Even still since then work is inconsistent. I bought my Camaro while I was out of work. I wanted an SS so bad, but the payment would have been around 500-600 a month. And being engaged with a wedding to pay for plus everyday bills hurts. I had to stay in budget. The only reason I bought my car when I did was because my jeep still had value, and it was the only way I would have been able to buy my Camaro. I do small jobs on the side, I fix computers, do home repairs, mount TVs etc. Plus I do security a few places as well. I'm trying to get a job on the police force, anywhere that will except me, I need something steady because my wife is now pregnant due with our first
In May-June. It sucks being out of work. I hate it, especially when everyone else you know is working. I sit in the house and try not to go anywhere to not spend $. I was fortunate enough to pick up a heritage grill from a member here last week that I installed yesterday. I had to get out of the house, working on my car helps me get through it, but is difficult without funding. |

After nine months of unemployment, I just started new job this week. Hang in there, I know it sux but if you network with others, go the Monster.com and other job sites route, you will probably find something. You need to be flexible about salary and position level too.I took a one third pay cut and level down position. I'm bumping up against age 60 so I knew it wasn't going to be easy. Be flexible.
Keep your mind fresh (Luminosity.com) and skills up to date. NY City is the new SoCal. Lots of IT positions that pay well here. Unfortunately too many folks come in with an attitude when going thru the interview process and turn managers and tech interviewers off. Again, hang in there guys, I feel for ya....

I've been out of a job for since just before Labor Day, but I've been busting my ass helping parents renovate a house, applying for any type of work. Luckily I'm young enough that I can still markets self well, I've enrolled for classes at the local college and have become fluent in a 2nd language. Finances are tight for wife and I as we have mortgage, car payment for the newest camaro vert, and daily life.
