I believe they kept that and other trademarks (Oldsmobile) they had because they KNEW other companies (especially the Chinese) would jump on them like rabid animals and possibly release low quality product under that name. People would then associate new crap cars with GM as most people don't know the difference.

Also they likely still sell aftermarket and warranty parts and things like that with those various corporate logos/identities.

I think if they could just bring back the brand name and a few models it would be alright, if GM would just cut some models from Cadillac (they have too many) such as Escalade choices, and unpopular models then they could use a few Pontiac models as they were popular with younger buyers that needed a sedan. Honestly, there isn't really a good sedan out there as of right now, the best in my opinion were offered by Pontiac because they had great styling and low cost.

Cadillac has too many models? You do realize they're getting by just on CTS, SRX, and Escalade right now? Cadillac needed new product yesterday.

The majority of Pontiacs at the end were just rebadged Chevrolets anyways. And a boatload were unprofitable fleet sales.

There seem to be so many people that car about the name more than anything, but when it comes down to dollars, it's never worth it for the company. I liked the last Grand Prix body style, GTO was kinda cool, even if it was all FWD, saw a V8 Bonneville today (not sure what the diff was tho, haha) and even that last body style wasn't too bad compared to the horrible previous one, but at the end of the day these were not great cars and a GM G8 would make me just as happy compared to being called a Pontiac, and if there's no room in the lineup, it's ridiculous to make an entirely different brand for them. In business I'd say it's the exact opposite of what you would want to do, you are trying to find a market for a product, rather than find a product for a market.
You mean RWD?
