How do our FOBs work?

They don't ping a tower at all do they? I don't think the tech in these 5th gens is new enough for something like that. I did see the article that the OnStar for old GMs will be sunsetting, and think that only affects things like the link and XM radio...correct?

If I were a guessing man, it's all just basic transmitters from your key fob to the module beside the rearview mirror and nothing else. I never looked too much into this stuff until recently over the last year, and still have a few questions about the tech our cars use.

Only cell service items, (link) will be affected due to 5G. XM is a satelite based service like Red has said.

No that’s a separate module in the radio. Bluetooth will be fine.

Our key fobs use basic radio signals at a certain frequency.

The more modern fobs and keyless fobs use a blue tooth signal with rolling pass codes to connect and control the car.

Neither are effected by the extinction of the 2g and 3g cell phone services that are ending later this year.

Blue tooth devices do not use a cell phone service to connect.

My camaro came with two keys/fobs. Pretty typical. Does the car allow a 3rd or 4th key/fob to get programmed as well, or does the technology restrict it to only 2 keys max?
