Gear oil question

What is the preferred gear oil for the ZL1
( not the 1LE ), weight, full synthetic,or
Regular oil, and amount.

The ZL1 and 1LE are the same drive train. Order two quarts in case you spill some, get a pump also. I changed mine around 500 and 1500 and it was pretty nasty.

I’ve used Redline in both my previous ZLE and current ZL1. Also used their transmission fluid in my M6 ZLE and made a noticeable difference in cold weather shifting and overall smoothness. Will switch to them in my current A10 ZL1 when it needs it.

just fyi, If your gear oil is nasty you may have abnormal wear going on. I really only have my SS and Zl1 to compare..

I've done both cars religiously the SS has always been dirty from day 1 the zl1 oil looks like the same color coming out.

fast forward 4 oil changes and 3 weeks ago doing the oil and the SS now has play in the output shafts the zl1 is still clean and tight as rock.

think that's 5year drive train warranty? or extended warranty?

Jack - Did you run OEM oil for both cars? I'm just curious. I'm less than 2k-miles from the 1k-break-in oil change and was thinking maybe I'd change it, just because. I did use OEM oil for the first oil change though.

Thanks.

For the OP about the A10 oil. It's my understanding it's got a very specific viscosity, so just make sure to use the appropriate oil. I believe it's super-thin, for economy, so just throwing that out there.

I use Amsoil Signature ATF in mine and it's been working great. Smoother shifts than the OEM fluid.

I just changed my diff oil for the first time at 950 miles and 6 months of ownership. I know I need to drive it more, but it's not my daily. Anyway, the oil was much cleaner than I expected from reading the other posts. There was some light accumulation on the drain plug.

Amsoil Severe Gear is proven to be superior to Delco branded via actual testing

People always believe the OEM marketing hype

It’s hard to say as I’m not sure what definition of clean or nasty is. I changed mine at 500 and it didn’t look good, had some stuff on the drain cap, but I’m guessing a little of the metals etc smears a lot. Changed again at 1500 and the Redline oil looked much cleaner, but that could be down to the different colors of the oil and of course was the second change.

Anyone know why gear oil has so much more of a lingering smell than motor oil? Is it the FM/heavier weight etc?

OP, if you with either Redline or Amsoil you’ll be fine and it is better than the OEM stuff from everything I’ve read. Your car your choice. You most likely won’t have any issues with the OEM stuff either as long as you change it at the recommended intervals. I went with Redline due to the harsher climate in MN and I’ll probably track it a time or two.

The SS has play in the output shafts? Are you talking about the axle/half shafts? Is that something that happens after 5 years on the SS?

I changed mine at 1200 miles. Here's what it looked like. Be careful when ordering the pump. The new gear oil bottles have a larger opening then in the past. If someone could point me to where it states change sooner, I'ld appreciate it. The dealer said it wasn't necessary.

No document states it should be changed sooner than after 45k miles, we do it as common sense precaution to flush out contamination caused by initial wear. It may not be technically necessary, but doesn't hurt either and can help discover early issues with the differential.
