Mine I checked 4 times the old way, and it's dead-nuts with the display.
Guess it boils down to the ol'
YMMV.

It could but it's hard to say I know a lot of guys that no matter what they have to be right will make stuff up spin things in any direction they have to just to prove they're right.

You sure you're not driving the V6

25 miles from nearest expressway, so around here most of the time as a D/D; yes, you have to drive with an IQ greater than 2-digits; with cops thicker than outhouse flies, a drug operation going on somewhere in the area, and school startup with kids and busses scattered around. And the propensity of idiots painting bike lanes recently all over 4-lane roads, and cutting them down to 2-lanes---for bozo's that pay nothing to maintain the infrastructure. Don't get me started on that one.
But if you're talking expressway, yeah, I get 27 at average 85-90mph barring any cops with Kodaks.
6500~ miles on 6 month old car, so it doesn't do a whole lot of holding a garage-queen title.
Plus, wife starts to bitch if I get the right foot syndrome if she's with me.

Downhill record to work with no busses or kids, 39.1. Going back up, 25~ dropping the average to 32~
Totally realistic.
That's way too optimistic for the V8, even the auto.

Straight highway, 30 is manageable, for some. Especially on flat roads. Most people will get between 25 - 28, though

With an average speed of 40mph, it's probably almost all highway!

Small hilltowns, connected by 2 lane (formerly 4-lane, thanks to dinks on bikes) highways, speed limits average right around 40 mph---downhill to go to town, up to go back home.

As stated before by several others, 31-32 is possible by relying on AFM and using, hm, feather-swipe throttle style on highway stretches with no hills, my best is 31.4 on a realistic route, ie not just a few miles one way down a hill. Of course, all this goes south the moment you actuate the "magnets" in the floor and the back of the go pedal.

Then again I'm sure nobody here bought a V8 for fuel economy.

You used only 1/4 of the tank driving 284.7 miles?

That smells hella fishy.

My stock 2016 2ss a8 shows a lifetime average (9367 mi.) of 25 mpg. I live 20 miles from a decent sized town so its about 75% highway, 25% city driving. Its a second car that I bought last December with 4800 mi. on it. It " shows" 30 to 33 mpg at 60-65 mph. I wrote down the miles last time I filled up, so I will know if thats close before long. I dont drive hard very often, too many troopers around. It was made in Dec. 2015 and so far not a single problem. Even the a8 has been perfect so far. Hope I stay lucky !
