How are you going to do the cam? Pull the motor or remove the front of the car?

I'm pulling the motor. I've read that leaving it in is possible but it's difficult to see one of the timing marks.

That being said the engine is all ready to come out, just waiting for my brother to come help me out tomorrow to help guide it and keep an eye out for things I may have missed.

Does anyone know what the size the bolts are? I forgot to grab one. The bell housing bolts aren't going to be long enough for my engine stand.

I made no progress yesterday. I was too chicken to go back out to the garage in 26° weather and start a fire.

Since I don't have anything to vacuum the ac system, I'm unbolting the compressor and hanging it out of the way. There's 2 bolts up top, a stud that has a nut on it, and the stud itself comes off with a 5mm iirc. The one on bottom is very slow going unless you take the sway bar out, which I opted not to do. Other than that, a bunch of electrical connectors, ground wires and some motor mounts. I'll post pics when it's out to show the motor mounts. There's 7 or 9 bell housing bolts,(not certain atm) all but one are easy to get to. The 1 just needs a wobble extension. Wobble extensions are a must for this project!!!! I have needed them several times.

Hopefully Thursday at the latest I'll have the engine out and on a stand.

looking forward to the write up. There are other engine that the timing marks are hard to see, sometime the fix is as simple as marking the chain with white, red and blue hash marks and not paying any attention to the factory mark...

That totally slipped my mind. But it still may be difficult to apply the rtv sealant while it's in the car. But once I get the out I'll put a how to together that hopefully makes more sense than the notes I have right now

Yes you need them off (headers) There's motor mounts underneath, and all the clearance you can get for anything on this project it good.

I unbolted them, removed the heads then took the headers out of the bay. Just undo your 02 sensors, and gently lower them as far as you can until the heads are out (without scratching if your coated, or snagging wires or hoses)

It's out and I hope there's a better way. I had to drop my motor mounts to get the engine in there a little lower, then drop the tranny. (M6). Then i could take my motor. Hopefully there's an easier way. Lol

That must be an M6 thing. The motor comes right out on the A8's. You have to remove the motor mounts but they are easy to get to.

That's what I'm thinking. That twin disc clutch makes it a little trickier. I could get about 2 inches of gap between the engine and trans, but my oil pan would hit on the k member. Pulling the trans backwards was the only way I could. Very jealous of you a8 guys rn. Lol

You mean you removed the trans crossmember/brace/ mount, what ever the proper term for it is, its just 4 bolts and you lowered the trans??? If so thats not toooo bad, i actually installed bmr motor mounts on my car, there way smaller and easier to install / remove. So i know how that is.

That makes perfect since. I am wondering what would be involved with dropping the front cradle. I have to do that with the Vetts. That is definitely a labor consideration.
