LED Turn Signals

I find it interesting that most of the exterior lights are LED's but the turn signals are not. Why is this and is it easy to change them to LED? I changed the reverse lights to LED already and I like that lighting much better. Also switched the side marker lights to Diode Dynamics which I really like. I'd like to make the blinkers be LED as well so that everything matches.

Well, the most likely reason is co$t savings.

The halogens are very easy to swap out for LED's, the only potential issue is low resistance that may cause hyperflash (the ECU will think one or both of the halogen bulbs are defective). I bought a pair from amazon that advertised built-in resistors and they indeed work perfectly and are much brighter than stock. This specific model seems to be unavailable, but there are others that look very similar (never tested any other myself, though).

A word of warning, I'm sure these LED's with built-in resistors will overheat eventually, so the only place I'm willing to use them is for the turn signals that are active for a very short period. For this reason I used a proper resistor kit with the white reverse LED's.

Thank you. I use a resistor for each of the reverse lights as well. Those little stinkers get hot if the reverse lights are on for very long! Do your resistors get hot?

Yes, but I didn't add individual resistors, instead I bought the reverse light harness from Gen5DIY, and it has a heat shield around the (single big kahuna) resistor, plus I tucked in so it only ever touches the body and never any plastic trim or wiring.

Never gave me any problems and I've had both this thing and the turn signal LED's on the car for over a year now.

Reverse lights don't need to imitate the halogen current draw to make the ECU happy. They require a resistor (one shared for both) because the reverse switch that turns them on and off is garbage and leaks power that the LEDs can sometimes use and will look like they never turn off or flicker when they should be off. Halogen suffer the same issue but by their nature the power isn't enough to heat the filament.

You can use a high resistance resistor which can sink the current enough to not power the reverse LEDs when off but not enough current will go thru to make it hot when on. Bonus is the reverse LEDs will get full voltage too rather than in some installations with load resistors, getting slightly lower voltage.

Edit:. The newer 2019 may be different from the info above, fyi

I've had these in for months now with 0 issues, no hyperflash.

One of the reviewers said they experience hyper flash if the turn signal was on for an extended period of time. You’ve never had that? Of course not many times where your turn signals will be on for long periods of time. Maybe with the hazards on though. However, it’s Amazon, so I’ll test them out and if there’s a problem returns are easy. Thanks for the suggestion. Are they much brighter than stock?

Also, how do you get to the drivers side turn signal. There’s a rubber cover in the way. Does it just pull back?

I for one never have my turns on for more than 30 seconds These should be much, much brighter than stock, and activation is instantaneous, there's no ramp-up and ramp-down in luminosity, so your vehicle will exude a more contemporary feel.

That rubber flap peels back and you can reach underneath to get the turn signal bulb socket out. If you have a relatively small hand, that is. My father sure couldn't do it, I was barely able to (but then it's reasy to remove the rubber cover if need be).

Just received these today and installed them fairly easily. The drivers side is pretty tight but it went in after a little maneuvering. I turned on the hazards for a coupe of minutes and there were no problems. I like the instant on/off. Looks much more modern. They are pretty bright as well. Much brighter than the original incandescent bulbs. Hopefully they aren't too bright. Now, lets see how they hold up over time.

Sorry for bumping this thread but how close of color are these to the stock bulbs? It’s been pissing me off that every other light on these cars are LEDs and need to switch lol
