Mickey 305/45R17 ET Street R

I realize that this has been cussed and discussed to death, but maybe my latest experience will be enlightening to someone. Just got new 17"x10" rear wheels and purchased two of these rear tires. I have a love/hate relationship with these tires. Love how they hook. But they are heavy, mounting/balancing is always an adventure and the tires slip on the rims. Decided after reading tons of threads to balance the naked wheels first (took 1/2 oz. each), mount the tires dry and balance the assembly again. Tires appeared to be out of round on the balancer and called for 4 oz. weight (both tires). Tire store balked. "Too much weight and sure to shake." Called Mickey Thompson and explained situation. Their advice: "Mounting dry sometimes does not completely seat the bead and will cause the tire to look out of round." 1.) Break the beads and apply a coating of black RTV. Re-seat the beads and inflate to max pressure (44+\- lbs.) and leave the pressure that way for a while. According to Mickey, RTV gives it a "double whammy"; provides lubrication for seating bead and will help hold the tire from slipping on the rim after it bonds. (Clean-up? They say comes off easily with mineral spirits). 2.) Balance and don't worry about 4 oz. "that is in our tolerance". The tolerance is "up to 2% of the tire weight". In this case, 31 lb. tire can take up to 9+ oz. of weight. (I would not have done that (9+ oz) even though it is in "tolerance".) This is the procedure we followed, the wheels/tires are on the car and going to the strip Sunday afternoon. Will report back.

I have never had these tires slip on the rim and I am over 900 rwhp. I wonder if it is related to the type of wheels you are using?

Could be. Old wheels were Racestars, new Bogart. We'll see how they do, but the RTV is new to the equation, so may never know. Glad to hear this is not a universal issue.

I used Welds on my last car and Racestars on this one. Both were over 900 and neither spun the tire on the rim. I'm curious now to what could be causing yours to do it.

I am sure rim plays a factor which is why some wheels have knurled beads and also why you see beedlocks. However RWHP isn't really the issue if you are not hooking hard out of the hole. Once you start going sub 1.6 60fts they can spin on the rim fairly easy even with moderate power levels. I spun a set on some race stars with a 450whp 4th gen. Either way I am not a fan of Mickey Thompson tires for all the reasons the OP mentioned. Hard to balance, heavy, wear fast...I would run a Hoosier DR2 for the track.

I am running the same tires on my 17x10 Weld S77's with no issues.

This may go without saying, but I'll throw it out there anyway so there is no doubt about what the issue is. I didn't know my tires were slipping on the rim for a long time, I just knew I got a vibration after a few trips to the track. Once I started marking the tires with a mark aligned with the valve stem it became obvious. For example, the last trip to the track the right slipped about 2" and the left about 1". Eventually, the balance is out of whack and it vibrates, sometimes violently on the big end. Unless you are marking your tires and checking them, you won't know the tire is slipping. As for 60', for reference, best is 1.472 typical is 1.49 - 1.52 leaving in 2nd gear.

Went to the track yesterday and made two passes. One leaving in 1st gear (1.52 60') and one leaving in 2nd gear (1.57 60'). Right rear stayed put, left rear slipped on both passes. If only one was going to slip, I would have figured it would be the right side, but that was not the case. Photos below are as mounted, after first pass and after second pass. Total travel in two passes - about 3 inches.

I have seen 1/2"-1" of tire spinning on my wheels each time out, which at that point did produce a noticeable vibration. I did not put any RTV or other product on when putting the tires on the wheels, but did use some bead setting lube. I HATE my race stars but I guess you get what you pay for. But here is my combination, I also run 16-18 PSI in them at the track.

Rear
Wheels: Race Star 92's 17x10.5
Tires: M/T ET STREET R BIAS 28x11.5

Definitely worth going with beadlocks IMO. I loved the Welds but thought $1100/ea for wheels I’d use a couple times a year was a bit silly. The Forgestar D5 is half the price and look badass..oh, and they stop the tire spin too.

Nice setup, Josh. Looked at that in December and wish I had gone that route. Hindsight is 20/20 as they say. One of my Mickeys was defective (separated tread/out of round) returned it and can not find a replacement anywhere. Bought two Hoosiers and having them mounted today and trying to make it to the strip tonight. If anyone needs a single P305 ET Street R, you can find it on EBay here: http://ebay.us/ZkY0Ps?cmpnId=5338273189

I've had them move just like Josh's. I called Mickey Thompson and they said use Permatex Hightack Cement. I did that on my Camaro and I also did it on my C7. Tire will not move on wheel. The way we did it is dry mount and then balance. Mark the valve stem/tire and then break them back down. Apply a light coat of Permatex (comes with brush) on the tire and bead of wheel. Wait till its tacky and the air them back up. No spinny on wheel anymore. I was told the same thing by Mike at Kentshotrodgarage where I bought the Race Stars and Drag Radials/skinnies. Here is a link to what I used.

#18825 DBR 28.0/10.5R17 It is a slick, not DOT. Good for a 1.491 60' last night with so-so track prep and tons of cars including street tread cars. 8 Lbs lighter than the Mickey. One took zero ounces to balance, the other took 3 ounces. They were smooth running on the track. Hoosiers and Mickys appear to have similar grip.
