Crankshaft damage

I've got a weird one. Long story short I took my car to a shop because it still wasn't making the power it should. They tore into it and said the crank snout was damaged because the ATI damper keyway wasn't aligned properly. Can this even happen? I looked at the super damper installation and didn't see anything relating to that. I'm kinda pissed the crank is "trashed". I attached the two photos they sent me

Looks like it sheared the key off to me. It may not be fully "trashed" after a little clean-up with fine emery cloth. They'd have to check the size of the snout and maybe get a new ATI, and hopefully you still have the proper interference fit. Hard to say just based on these two pics, though. I can't tell what's metal and what's maybe just anti-seize.

RobZL1 would that damage cause the car to make less power? The car isn't making what it should

If the balancer was spinning on the crank, then yes. Any idea what the manifold pressure was, and was it reasonable for your mods?

No harm...that's ****ed.

That crank needs replaced ( and balancer )

Double key or key/pin whatever goes back in

I'm not yet on the totally f'd train with this one. I'd want to see what it looks like and check the diameter once it's been cleaned up if it were mine.

So, you wouldn't try to clean it up with some emery cloth, remove the remainder of the key, check the diameter of the snout, and see if it's salvageable prior to pulling the motor? If it was mine, that's what I'd do. If you look under the oil pump, it just looks like the key and the balancer have deposited themselves onto the snout. I'd clean it up, check the diameter, press on a new balancer, and pin it twice.

I would guess the crankshaft bolt came loose. Additionally to add what’s already said, use an ARP Crankshaft bolt and torque it to 250 foot lbs. it will stay secured.

Well it didnt before...keyed, on a good crank, with a good pulley.

The pulley is an interference fit onto a clean crank....that crank is ****ed.

Now of course he can throw together anything he wants..but dont expect it to last long.

Has to be a press fit pin any looseness will lead to what is shown.

Hence my point. If it cleans up and the diameter is still good, press and pin a new balancer and go to town. If the diameter is too small, time for a new crank.
