Can anyone diagnose this noise?
Is this a snapped Timing Belt?
I was driving causally and then I decided to floor it just to feel the power lol, nothing happened then. I stopped at a red light, as soon as it turned green, I slowly accelerated and all of the sudden it almost sounded like I hit dirt or debris on the road when it occurred and you could hear the ticking sound afterwards as if it was hitting something and I could almost feel it in the pedals. I managed to drive home and Im not sure if i can drive it to GM in this condition. https://youtube.com/shorts/Zyus1KAeAgA?feature=share I took a quick look and noticed the small belt had rough edges and looked torn. The GM dealership is a mile and a half away, would it be safe to drive it there without towing it? |

That sounds like something in the accessory belt system- not the engine itself. Maybe the belt tensioner pulley? I’ve read that others have had failures with that piece.
Hard to say for sure but if it’s just 1.5 miles to the dealer but I think you could limp it along that far.

Any idea how much that would cost to repair?

You can almost tell that it looks chewed on, so I guess it’s definitely the belt? Last edited by AutoPenalti; 05-09-2021 at 09:55 PM. |

Update: Just got the car back from GM after being down for 4 days. I was told it was definitely the Accessory belt that was about to give out, got it fixed. Nice $226.
Funny thing he mentioned to me was that I should be driving the car a lot more than I do now, he claims that he's been getting a lot of people coming in with issues because they aren't driving their cars a lot (because of the pandemic or for other reasons). I told him I really only drive 18 miles daily back and forth + 8-12 miles on the weekends on average. The belt was dried up and cracked. Little does he know that I sometimes like to hear the V8 roar when I'm bored. |

I'm glad it was an easy fix. I'm indifferent about the mechanics advice. A lot of people drive their cars less than you and this is the first thread I've read about a cracked and frayed accessory belt. I'm sure others have had to replace this belt but its not a common concern that I've seen. I say drive the car when you can and have fun!

Seems like it should have been a warranty job. I can’t think of anything on the accessory belt that would go out before 100k.
