Major software update...

Left me stranded for a good 15-20 minutes in a retail parking lot. Little unsettling to say the least, I've never had that happen before. Went in and shopped, when I came back, whole car was dead besides the software updating progress bar. No response from anything in the car except for the door locks, around 20 or so minutes later it finished, I got the big green check mark on the display. Everything good after that. Hard to believe that a software update could shut your whole car down, good thing I was not in a hurry. :-) Welcome to the 21st century.

I had a update yesterday. Took about 10 minutes.

I tried to find notes online for what the update addressed, but didn’t have any luck.

It states before the update begins, that you can drive the car...

Maybe you missed seeing the notification pop up on the screen?
I saw it. Hit ok and went inside. It didnt start the update till the car shut off. Figured that was plenty of time, figured wrong. Lol. Odd feeling sitting in dead car, in a dark parking lot, watching a progress bar tick by.

Just another reason things in cars shouldn't have to have updates in the first place. they are only force feeding it to us because it is cheaper for them.

You hit OK. So why are you upset about it? Maybe should have hit OK when you're home and not going out for the night.

Why would a car need "updates"? What is being updated exactly? Are they suddenly going to give you an extra 50lbft? How 'bout another 100hp?

Well, that's how it works with Tesla, part of their allure. Overprovisioned hardware from the factory and dripping software updates to "unlock" the extra performance. Any other manufacturer could also do it with their tunes and infortainment features, but they either didn't think of it, consider it too risky or are simply lazy.

I’m assuming this update was only for the 2019 and 2020 models? Earlier models need to get any updates from the dealership right?

Yep. I'll check with my dealer after winter hibernation, but I doubt there will ever be anything new released for our cars, short of a recall or mandatory security update.

So the 2019's & 2020 have live updating? What happens if your car is tuned or modified?

Out of curiosity, do you know the version number of the most up to date software the 2018’s. I bought mine in March of 2019, so I’m guessing the software is the newest available, but I’m not sure.

Last fall my senior service tech gave me a printout of the SW calibration update status pages from their system, let me type it up here.

Okay, it says the following:

EngineControlModule: 12688025 - New software to improve generic scan tool operation
Radio: 84304227 - New software to support over-the-air programming
AudioAmplifier: 84088425 - New calibration for improved performance

I don't want to unwrap and wake the car just check what the infotainment SW status screen says, but it's likely 84304227.
