My thought is go sell the car first and stay away from rentals.
No effing way. Average trade on a ‘16 SS Convertible with 70K miles and some cosmetic work needed is $20K:

That’s for a 1SS. The 2SS is a lot higher.

Good catch by you. I don’t disagree with that point, but no way a dealer is giving 26K trade on a car that shows an accident and currently needs body work... If it was just the 70K miles but was clean with no accidents, then I’d be in full agreement with you.

Thanks... Didn’t mean to come off like an attack. And I agree a dealer wouldn’t come close to that, especially with 70k and damage. Frankly, I was shocked there’s such a big difference between a 1SS and 2SS. Makes zero sense to me.

Based on all that, I would think he could get 22-23k on trade, right?

No worries! Given that I own a 2SS, you would have thought I would have paid closer attention to that.

Dealers have been brutal with trade-in’s over the past few years. Everyone knows what dealer invoice is, what holdback is, what the dealers incentives are, etc. The only way they make more is by getting the customer to take less on a trade-in. If you get full book for your trade, they made it up on the new car price. OR, they were paying floor plan charge on a car they were desperate to move.

I think if the OP took care of any cosmetic damage he has before attempting to trade it in, he’ll possibly do even better that 22-23K. But dealers always assume the 2K in damage that you think you have is actually much worse. Hard to blame them since there is always stuff that gets missed at trade-in evaluation time.
