My engine is getting dirty
Can I spray it down with a bottle of engine cleaner then safely spray it at low pressure at a self service car wash?

If you keep up on it you never have to get too far into it... Here is my engine with nearly 9,000 miles...

Engine cleaner is very aggressive, it's designed to remove baked on oil/dirt. I would use something like Simple Green or Turtle Wax Maxpower and then spray with WD-40, nothing under the hood is going to be effected by water spray.

low pressure clear water works perfectly well, you really shouldn't have a grease and oil problems that needs a "cleaner".

A word of caution for you. Be very careful to avoid spraying even low water pressure directly on the red CAMARO lettering on the beauty covers. I’ve ruined two sets now thinking extremely low pressure garden hose water wouldn’t have any effect. Painted flaked right off.

I have been cleaning the engine bays in my cars for years and never had a problem with bagging the alternator, intake, and ECU. I use a diluted APC (All Purpose Cleaner), which is different than a degreaser, which is much harsher. My go to right now is DIY Detail APC. I spray the APC on very light and use a soft bristled brush to agitate grimy areas. Using my Ryobi electric power washer using the 40 degree tip, I spray away the dirt and grime, making it a point to keep the wand moving and not flooding any particular area with water. I use my air compressor to blow away any excess water, spray on a finishing detailer and wipe it all down.
One of the most important things to remember is not doing this while the engine is hot. Allow it be cool to the touch and you should be just fine. Kind of interested to know what technique's other people are using. |

Worst I’ve cleaned was my sister’s old 2014, she came home after living in Glendale, AZ for a year or two. I used light water from a little gardening water bucket, Simple Green and a medium brush from Walmart.

Tub o Towels work great to clean it up if its real dirty - might use 2 or 3 and have the rest for another time... otherwise I just use Optima No Rinse diluted 265:1 with a microfiber rag.
