George, I had a pump failure and had the European oil in the car!

I suspect that is the case and I am located in Europe. Need to special import the oil in order to get it right.

What are my options?

I just re-read the title of this thread. And I don't remember noticing the "possible oil pump failure" line.

When I had my oil pump failure and replacement, neither the mechanic that replaced the pump nor the service manager said anything about switching back to 5w30.

So, where is the evidence that the 0w40 esp oil could be the source of the failure? I would have hoped that the dealer would have said something to me about this if this were true...

Is the engine still running good and seeing no oil pressure issues Steve? I guess you are good to go with the 0w40 oil if neither one mentioned switching back to 5w30.

There is none - low information posts.

Nor does "European 0W-40 oil" (i.e. oil that meets Mercedes and various European standards) have anything to do with failure of a GM oil pump.

It is absolutely running good. In fact, I drove her to work and back yesterday. Still seeing 40 to 48 psi all the time.

Now, in truth, I had the 0w40 esp oil in it when it failed. The obviously had to drain the oil to pull the pan off. No where in the paperwork do I see what they put back in it. So, I supposed it could be 5w30. But I really do NOT know.

Looking over the invoice again, I see where they put 10 qt of oil in it. I just tried to look up the part number on the "thatgmpartsguy" website. But is just says oil, there is nothing about viscosity there...

As Hell Raiser stated it’s 5w30 so that’s probably what they put in your ZL1 since it’s the recommended oil for your 2018.

But "Euro" 0w/40 has increased sulphur and phosphorus (non ESP) which could lead to catalytic issues. I did send in my oil for a Blackstone analysis, which came back fine.

Thank you to everyone for their input.

I would definitely get a warranty review and see if the dealer put that oil in your car. It seems Dexos2 0w/40 oil is in Europe. In an earlier post, someone in France found Castrol 0w/40 Dexos 2 at 53Euro for 5 liters. I would look for that. If you are military, I used to get some car stuff shipped to my APO address but you should check with them on base first.. I would also use Amazon (Europe) if you can't find it in stores.

0.8% sulphated, typical of dexos which is double the price
