Issues with brake rotors, please give me insight.
I replaced my stock pads with Power Stop Z26 pads 1.5 years ago to stop the insane amount of dusting the factory pads produced. Now I am dealing with an interesting problem and don't know what to do about it. Not only do the brake rotors appear to look scorched and spotting, the car has a vibration when braking hard at high speeds (not the steering wheel shaking, but rather the cabin vibrating). It goes away once I go below 80mph or so and during normal driving feels fine.
Do I need new rotors or is there a solution for this? Car only has 6,600 miles. Also, are there any more aggressive pads that don't dirty the wheel after one or two uses? The factory ones were insane. The powerstops are super clean, but the braking power is terrible. |

The more bite/performance a pad has the more dust it’s gonna create. Just how the pad world goes. When you installed the z26 pads did u burnish them?

I would say the rotors are warped. Try having them turned before replacing them. And get new/ better pads.
I had a similar problem with my Viper. After 2 track days in a row on stock rotors and Carbotech XP24/10. Had a terrible vibration stopping from 140 -150mph under heavy braking. Street driving it wasn't as noticeable. Had them turned by a Viper tech and he said they were warped pretty bad.

Yeah, I burnished them. I wouldn't mind a little bit more dust, just not oem dust.
As for turning the rotors, I can't find someone that'll turn two piece rotors. I've asked a few places and they say it's "impossible". lol. |

Since you're in DFW what about the performance shops? LG Motorsports, 21st Century, etc....
The Viper Tech at Viper Exchange in Tomball turned mine. Worst case I'm sure they would help you out. The local Dodge dealer told me they couldn't be turned which of course was bullshit.

By the look of the rotor, you definitely have uneven pad material deposits on the rotor which may be causing your vibration. If you cannot get someone to turn the rotors, you may want to try to sand off the deposits with a fine grit sand paper just to see if you feel a difference. Cheaper than new rotors.

I tried this and still had to have them turned. Guess it depends on how bad they are.

I agree that it looks like my problem is uneven pad deposits. Steering wheel never shakes no matter how hard I stop, it's the cabin that vibrates and stops vibrating once I go under 80mph or so. Any recommendations on a new set of pads? Low dust that are better than the Power Stops? |

I could be seeing things a little differently, but do you use a spray on wheel cleaner? Cause I've seen rotors look like this after using wheel cleaner, especially when the rotors are hot, they will scorch. It does sound like your rotors may be a little warped, but it may have nothing to do with the pads.

the rotors have stock brake material embedded in them initially and now you have a different pad material. The difference in pad material is causing your issue. Get the rotors turned (clean up pass) or replace the rotors. That abrasive rotary attachment above may work, but I have my doubts.

They look glazed, did you bed the pads properly? If not, do it again. Gotta get them hot to burn it off.

Z26 pads are not for hard driving. yeah they dust less but as you can see on a ZL1 they can over heat pretty quick. Even the manufacture of those pads will tell you that.
