Maybe where you live. But, here in the desert, the all season tires are much better than ultra performance summer tires in the winter months. I actually have grip in 30 degree weather. Therefore, not a load of crap.

The ditches here this past Saturday were lined with cars with all season tires.

I learned to drive in the snow in a '73 olds delta88 4 dr. in the high school parking lot on a Saturday. I had fun sliding and spinning for a few hours. Every teen should do that.

LOL, not even Blizzaks are going to turn a bad driver into a good one.

It's not that all season tires are great in the snow, it's just that summer max performance tires are that bad. The colder it gets, the harder the compound in the summer tire gets. This lack of pliability makes it like driving on plastic Tonka tires. The softer the compound, the harder the tire gets in freezing temps. This is why tires like Pilot Sport cup tires actually crack in cold weather. Now, tires like P-zero's will probably not crack, but they are not exactly a track capable tire either. They fall somewhere in the middle. You may make them work in snow, I've driven on summer tires in snow and made it work, but I also had to replace the rears annually. (not a Camaro and not P-Zero's)

What gets people into trouble the most is a combination of overconfidence and lack of attention. The trouble with many of the sophisticated suspensions on cars today is that they also reduce the feedback to the driver. While this is great for that smooth comfortable ride on a nice day, in hazardous conditions, by the time the driver senses they are in trouble, it's already too late and they are just along for the ride.

I used to have a '84 Caprice Classic as my first car. The thing would barely break the tires loose on wet pavement, but snow was awesome! Being a stupid teenager actually helped me learn a great deal about driving in adverse conditions as an adult.
My brother had a exp back in the early 90's he would scare the shit out of people. He would be going down a two lane highway at 60mph and hit the ebrake and slide sideways whip it around and be going the other way before you could say STOP. Of course he had bald spots on his tires

Returning from an evening out last night with 7 people in the Tahoe (and it set on 2WD, I hit the gas as I turned into my ice covered street, intentionally kicking the rear end out. The guys all giggled, the gals all screamed.

It's my firm belief that ALL young drivers be taken to a large empty parking lot where they can screw around to their heart's delight ... UNDER ADULT SUPERVISION AS PART OF A DRIVER'S ED CLASS... You LEARN MORE when you're having fun and doing the empty parking lot in the snow thing WILL help teach them how to drive and how not to drive in bad weather ...

... that was my excuse to my dad when I got busted by the locals who didn't give me a ticket, but TOLD ON ME because they knew my dad as a Sergeant in the next town over. He wasn't happy, but he never said anything about it and I never got punished.
