Advertising Fees

I ordered my car and they gave me the build sheet with the invoce and everything. Car has a arived and the cost is about $900 more. Dealer is trying to tell me it's some kinda of advertising fee Chevy has. Is that normal, true and something buyers gotta pay for?

I advertise that's bullshit. Unless they're talking about Destination which is $995, but that's not what you're saying.

Ask them for an updated invoice/sticker with the full breakdown, if not tell them they can sell it to someone else.

Advertising fees are part of many deals. It is a viable charge. Whether $900 is acceptable, that's another matter. Do a search here.

But no charge should be a surprise. A fully executed buyers order with the sales manager signature , with every cost and charge should be completed, when ordering the car.

Yup....Who do you think pays for all those Silverado and Malibu commercials? Most dealers in most areas are members of Ad groups which manage local advertising. That is billed to the dealer on a per unit basis and added to the invoice. It is a real cost to the dealer. Some areas might be less than others depending on the cost of advertising in that market. CA. is likely on the high side. I recall it was $700 or so here in NC.

Poked around some and I guess this is a real thing, but seems to be more of a bullshit tactic especially since there's no way for the consumer to know true cost, if any.

I've never seen this on any car I have purchased in NC or out of state.

Are you the same Modshack from the GolfMk5/6 forums?

Yup...It is real. Other manufacturers may run it differently, but I think the majors all do it this way. Some guys have reported here that there was no Ad fee, but they were in rural SMSA's where the associations likely did not exist.

Yup...Same Modshack!

Yeah, I picked mine up in VA and there was not an advert fee and none on the ones I was pricing locally or cars I was cross shopping in the Triangle. Guess it depends entirely on the area.

Nice! I went from the Mk6 GTI to Passat and finally back in a proper car. Can we expect any stuff from you for the Camaro?

Yeah...My car came out of the Wilmington area.

Likely nothing for the Camaro...Modshack is closed (well, I don't wander out to the garage every day now!) after building a ton of stuff of the VW/Audi guys over a 10 year period (Over 1000 of my signature airboxes, the VTDA).

Proper car..... Yup...Quite a difference!

I refused to pay it, they wanted 3%. Told them I would go to the other Chevy dealer 10 minutes away, and keep going to different dealers until I found on that wouldn't charge it. They folded. Negotiate everything.

Most dealers are in regional associations and those fees are a separate line item in the invoice column. The fees are also included in MSRP but not as a separate line item.

As you may have learned, everything is negotiable excluding Program Pricing deals. There is a member of the Corvette Forum who posts he has not paid the Destination Fee for his last nine transactions. He may even believe that. But rest assured, the fee got paid.

Do you recommend any dealers in the VA?

Not much to add as it's pretty been well covered. All I can say in my area of SoCal they wanted $945.40 for that fee.

I was given the workorderbench dealers invoice, there was no advertising fee included, only the destination charge. I specifically questioned the sales manager about the "LMA" fees that I had seen at other dealerships. He said, nope they don't charge them. I had him sign a buyers order to protect myself. When the car came in, the sales man handed me a print off saying that he wasn't sure why but they were billed about $600 higher than what the original invoice price was. He looked at me as to say "can you pay this please". I told him, nope, that's why I brought the signed buyers order, to protect myself.
