Tranny Shudder @ 97k miles
Good evening peeps. So I pulled the trigger on a high mileage 2017 SS (about 97k miles now). I didn't notice it when I test drove it but after driving it 1400 miles in the last week I discovered it has the all to common shudder issue. I'm going to call the local dealership to see if it ever had TSB 18-NA-355 performed on it. Assuming it has, is it possible the fluid just needs changing or is the converter probably shot? If nothing else its certainly due for a fluid change but could old fluid cause the issue? If the TSB hasn't been done, should I plan on having it done so late in the transmissions life? I've read up on all the threads on this but I don't think anyone has dealt with this on a high mileage car yet. Not sure how I should go about fixing this. Obviously I want to try the least expensive measures first before I commit to a torque converter replacement. Any advice would be appreciated.

The latest transmission fluid (Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP, part number 19417577, blue stripe on the bottle and not black) that actually fixes the problem came out in Jan 2019 as part of TSB 18-NA-355, so unless your A8 was flushed with this specific fluid, it can develop the shudder. |

I would certainly try a flush (or double flush) before considering a converter...

Adding onto the replies, if the cars been driven on the shudder for extended time then it can come back even with the latest fluid flush.

Exactly. That's what happened in my case, and it trashed the torque converter. Then they replaced it along with the new fluid and flush again

I dropped it off at a local transmission shop over the weekend. I’m gonna start with a flush and see if that helps. If not I’ll make arrangements to replace the converter. I can throw it in 7th gear when on highway and problem goes away. Driving around town 50 mph and slower it doesn’t do it.

I had the flush done with the new fluid at about 97k miles. I'm at 102 now and so far so good. Hasn't come back yet.

Trans Flush for Shudder Problem
I have read on these forums that some cameras are getting a three flush procedure. I contacted my dealer and was advised that the three flushes was only for vettes. Has anyone heard of this? I am scheduled to bring my 17 SS2 into the dealer next week and they will only do a single flush. Am I at a disadvantage with the single flush?
Thanks. |
