Rented a 5.0 Mustang, where's the torque?
I wanted to see what all the hype was about so I rented a 6 speed manual Coyote while traveling for Thanksgiving. I have driven a GT350 before and while I liked the sound and overall package, it felt like it was lacking the torque below 4K RPM needed to make it a really fun street car. I thought the Coyote would feel like it had more punch down low but it didn't give me that impression. What is it that people love about the Coyote so much when compared to the LT1? Is it just the sound? Does it respond better to boost? Both the 5.0 and GT350 seemed like they would be great road course cars but left me wanting more off the line for a street car.
The better visibility is nice and it does "feel" like a smaller car even though I think the dimensions are near identical to the Camaro. Some of the quirks Ford includes just make me scratch my head. Does the speedo really need to say "ground speed"? Who's idea was it to make a handbrake that needs to be pointed at 12 o'clock to be fully engaged or to put the cup holders right were you would rest your right arm? It looks like I will have to wait for the GT500 to be blown away by an offering from Ford. They sure are making everyone wait long enough. They better not wait too long or Chevy I'm sure will answer back with something better. At the end of day the Mustang and Camaro go together like love and marriage, can't have one without the other. So I am thankful for the healthy competition between manufactures. I guess I'm learning that I'm just more of a bow tie till I die kind of guy. |

They aren't even that great on a road course, at least compared to the Camaro lineup.

Unless you were stalking large Black Friday crowds in the Target parking lot you didn’t get the full mustang experience.

The torque in the Camaro is so present from idle to redline jsut about that you really notice it missing in the 5.0. Having had a 15 GT/PP for 3 years you really had to get it above at least 3K RPM as it's was pretty weak off idle for torque.

I owned both at the same time last year (2015 5.0 manual) and my 17 ss manual fifty. Both had pluses and minuses. The A10 is a beast (I've never driven one) and is just slightly faster than the Camaro ss. The manual ss is considerably faster than the manual 5.0 (6gen vs 6 gen). I'm not brand loyal at all and love both of them but prefer the ss to the 5.0. Now my Zl1 is no match for a 5.0

Don't forget there's also 1.2 liters of displacement difference between the two. The engine with the larger displacement (Camaro 6.2L) will have more torque or at least the feeling of more torque off idle and at low rpms.

Coyote doesn't make much bottom end, but they sure will sing on the top. Just a very different beast.
