2 Post Lift

Morning All,

Just had a 2 post lift installed in my garage. I have some experience with lifts.
Was taught years ago, to get the car off the ground a few inches and rock the front/rear bumper to determine stability and make the necessary adjustments. However, the manual talks about ensuring the car's Center of Gravity is between the posts. I think this is much more important when you drastically change that while working on it, i.e. remove the engine, transmission, etc. There are several different formulates to determine that......none of which I am going to do.
Just looking for advise from others, about where you center the car on the posts? Any advise/suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Fairly centered maybe a bit biased to the rear. If you are super worried, use high lift jack stands.

if you use the the forward most lift points and the rear lift points correct you will be fine. Center the lift points and use a non slip rubber pads

Ok, I am jealous. I wish my garage was tall enough for a 2 post lift...

No kidding!!

My dream garage was inspired by a house in my neighborhood. Custom built home, with very large garage that fits four cars on ground level, 2 in front and 2 in back. The owner is a car nut like us, he has 4-2 post lifts and 8 cars, most of which are classic muscle but also modern muscle. Lots of old Mustangs, and a new GT500 as well.

Total dream garage!! Need to take a couple cold beers with me and introduce myself the next time he has the door open, would love to see his cars.

OP, congrats on the new lift, we are all jealous.

It is a Bendpak, GP-7LC, GrandPrix. Did 4 oil changes with it on Sunday. Everyone in the family was waiting for it to be installed, so I had them lined up in my driveway! LOL

I loved my drive on lift. I looked at the two post but the drive on gave me a place to store it also off the shop floor. Was able to use it for about anything I wanted to including pulling the motor out of the top and raising back up and out of the way. You'll really like have that around for all kinds of mods, etc.

Same here, bendpak 14k 4 post. Love it and it holds everything from my Honda to my Ram 3500 long bed. They are very versatile, especially when you add a couple scissor jacks to it.

I'm on my fourth home shop lift, currently have an ATLAS 9000# four post. I built frame off tri five Chevy cars for ten years, then had four C5, C6 and C7 Corvettes and now my 2020 ZL1.

My first lift was a two post, but the subsequent lifts have been four posts. The main reason being I could do everything on a four post that I could on a two post and I bought caster kits so I could move the four post lifts around the shop. A two post will work just fine, especially if you have an asymmetrical two post.

Remember that the majority of lift failures are owner caused. Make sure no one gets under your lift until it's down on locks and verified safe. Also, check with your insurance company about DIY installation vs professional. Some companies do not want to insure when the installation was DIY. And they also don't like home lifts to be used for family and friends on a regular basis.

Unfortunately we did not custom build our current home and I cannot lift my ATLAS lift to full height, so I use a rolling shop stool. It works fine, but I'd sure like to be able to park beneath it. The ceiling height prevents that. The foolish original owners weren't thinking of my needs.

You can always get the ultra high jackstands to help ensure stability, totally worth it if you're concerned.

Example:

Is the lift symmetrical or asymmetrical? I have an as asymmetrical 2 post challenger lift and the car is balanced when offset to the rear by about 8-10 inches. I pay attention to how the car reacts right when it leaves the ground and make sure it lifts evenly.

The Jack's that Jon Daddy mentioned are a great addition. I picked up similar ones from northern yool and use them all the time. Perfect for exhaust work or anytime you need an extra hand or support.

Asymmetrical. Had it on the lift earlier today, moving the wiring harness on the driver's rear, getting it ready for my APEX wheels. Interesting you indicated 8-10 inches offset to the rear, because that is about where mine was today. Seemed very stable.
