Cam & Lifter Replacement after 5700 miles

Title pretty much sums it.

Started my 17' ZL1 up on Monday (Only 5700 miles in) to hear a ticking/chirping noise I never heard from the motor. Tried to figure it out with way too many possibilities. Was planning on driving it to our local Chevy Dealership only to decide to make the call to have it towed down to avoid additional damage.

Got the diagnosis today and was told that the #2 lifter was faulty causing wear damage to the cam thus starting the chirping/clicking sound. Although covered under warranty they have to tear em' down and replace the cam and lifters. NEVER did I think I would be dealing with this, this early, or prior to doing a cam swap.

Two Part Question:

1. Has anyone in and around a 2017 (April build date) experienced the same issue with such low mileage, and

2. Should I be concerned with any other problems with this failure to other area's that are not being replaced due to this failure later down the line?

I wonder how much metal made it into the pan.

See if they would replace the oil pump while they are at it. 17s and 18s have oil pump failures.

Already three steps ahead of ya. I tried to convince them to do that, even with an OEM pump but they refused to do anything preventative unless there were any codes or noted oil pressure loss to add to the service writers report. The only way they would replace it was if they could replicate an issue with it.

Wow Nightfall, hope my 2017 doesn’t develop a bad lifter or oil pump failure. Mine was built on April 10th of 2017 and so far no issues with almost 15,000 miles. Knock on wood! Good luck on getting yours repaired.

I have an April build date mine was fine so is the oil pump.

If your going to mod now would be the time!

buy the new GM oil pump replacement and have them replace it during the swap...insist they do it! It is approximately $130 when I checked last year.

Or at least pay the hourly difference between the two labor rates. There is a lot of labor overlap, but If one job is 15 hours and other 17 hours, see if they agree to just do it at labor of the difference.

What's left on your warranty ? Of course they will give you a additional warranty on the new installation of a cam and springs, but if it was me and my warranty was close, I would do pump at my cost, a aftermarket cam and springs, push rods, and after there done get it tuned ! You can save a lot of money, probably spend 1200/1300.00 ? A remember they just had a recall on 2020 ZL1 valvetrain ? There could be some bad 2020 springs out there waiting to be installed ?

Probably a AFM lifter that went. I would consider installing a LT5 cam(120.00) which deletes AFM and new oil pump. Should only require minimal tuning to make it work.

Revalot, I still have a good bit of time left on the warranty. Built April 18th 2017 and sold July 8th 2017 so I still have until July 8th 2022 left on my coverage. Sucks having to have this work done and replaced with factory parts. I do intend on doing a bunch of mods i.e Cam, Head Port, TB, E85 Flex Fuel kit, CAI, Kooks 2" LT, Catless Touring AWE, the list goes on.

Unfortunately with only 5700 miles on the clock I have to let GM do it on their dime just to make sure I'm back up and running until I'm ready to go MOD crazy. I love having a 17 with low mileage but don't want to run the risk of voiding the warranty this early.

After this repair is done I may just roll the dice and start plugging away at all the Mod's. We'll see.

Thanks for the input

Why do you love having a 17 with low mileage? Do you stare at it in your garage or drive it? I dont know why people buy 65k cars to drive then 1k miles a year... lol

I can’t answer specifically for him, but some of us have multiple cars and there are only x number of automobile travel miles per year to spread around the garage. Everyone’s situation is different.
