Super Street Brawler Under way

Everything is moving along pretty well. We dropped the motor, installed the cam, pistons, headers, front seal, e85 sensor, for the catch can we need a couple hoses...for the boost a pump, the directions weren't good, but working through it now. The gauges are being installed now also.

The motor is back in the car and we have one problem we couldn't work around. The in-tank zl1 fuel pump isn't a direct replacement so we need parts to be overnighted. If it wasn't for the missing fuel parts, the car would have had its first start tonight.

Hopefully I can get the parts overnighted tomorrow.

Getting close.

Will post some pictures when I get back tonight.

Looks good. Looking to go same route. How many hours do you have from start to engine back in. (Cam/pistons).

It was two days. Solid. But much of today was doing little things because of our problem with the in-tank pump.

We have one more lighter day to have everything done...but it all centers around getting the pump right.

Drsagacity, After your mods are complete, will you be able to use the car for dailey driver/cruse type driving? Can the car still be used for track or just strip?

He will be able to use it for sure. I did the initial install of the Supercharger and he planned it with the new mods to be able to drive it anywhere, then throw the drag pack on it and take it to the track. It should make over 700 at the wheels with ease.

What was wrong with the in tank pump? I am planning to upgrade mine in the fall and want to be prepared.

It was convertible specific. Apparently, the tank changed and as a result, GM had a different pump. . .that just meant that the stock ZL1 pump wasn't a direct replacement. We need to add a cross over tube kit and an extension basket.

@laynlo is right on the money. This car will be setup so you could easily daily drive if you wanted to. If I was going to daily drive the car, I might have done a couple things differently:

1. I would have gone with a quieter exhaust... - OR -
2. I probably would have selected Jannetty's smooth idle cam.

Otherwise, it should be good to go. I will drive on the street and make occasional trips to the strip. I will never go to the track (other than the strip)...and if I were going to track it, that too might have caused me to have other considerations.

Looking good. I am adding LT4 fueling and headers next weekend. Pistons and cam might be my winter project.

Are you going to have add a roll bar/cage to go to the track since it is a convertible?

Ah ha...makes sense. I keep forgetting your car is a convertible

I can't wait to hear the cam lope. :-) I am not adding a rollbar/cage. On my old car, I was good to hit the track for a single run...and then would get kicked out...This is exactly why I am questioning the idea of buying dedicated wheels/tires for the track.

I might have to really talk nicely about Laynlo just to see if we can throw his wheels and tires on for a single pass.

Otherwise, my car will end up with drag radials as soon as I burn off the current street tires.

I need to talk to Ted, but I'm thinking I will probably follow Steelheadrob's lead and do the LT4 stuff now (already have the in-tank pump) and save the cam & pistons for a winter project. Even though I'm planning to retire in a year, I'm busy as hell in the meantime and my car will probably be down for better than a month for the internal stuff. May as well enjoy it now while the weather is nice.
Drsagicity, Looking good! I envy your access to a shop with a lift! Did you do just the pistons, or pistons and rods? Apparently you did just "drop" yours in as I don't think you had time to balance.

Steelheadrob,

The Kooks headers look amazing! I also ordered cats and off-road pipes. We went off-road...but I will have the cats in case I have "emissions" issues to deal with...I could swap them out and be good. I don't anticipate that, but who knows. . .

This does bring me to one thing I am considering at this point. I think there is a distinct possibility that this configuration will be a little louder than what I wanted. Originally, that was the reason I was staying away from headers and cat removal. . .

If I think it's too loud, I may check into the QTP exhaust setup that allows muffler vs. straight pipe (or any other combination...especially if drone becomes a problem).
