LOL, I had to become an expert on Hondas class action lawsuit and had no interest in researching GM's success (or lack thereof) with this technology since I bought a manual LS3. But then I bought a 2007 5.3 Tahoe with AFM and wondered. As I posted in several Honda forums, "the computers are smart enough to make the engines deactivate cylinders but they are not smart enough to defy the laws of physics".

No, but they have very smart lawyers and hardass risk managers. Many longtime Honda owners got screwed but good. All Honda dealers were forced to tell customers that burning one quart per 1000 miles was "normal".

That is why they dropped out of formula one. All they do now is spec motors with no KERs.

Don't look now but Honda is coming back with McLaren in 2015.

Read the thread. You can have it tuned out, and likely void any powertrain warranty you may have left. Or, get a Range AFM disabling device - a non-traceable plug & play to your OBDII port. Just be sure to unplug it (5 seconds) if you bring it to a dealer for repairs/service.

TMI for most but if you want to see an auto manufacturer ruthlessly defending their reputation (at the expense of their customers), here is the Honda class action settlement.

http://settlement-claims.com/enginem...Documents.html

If you bother to wade through the actual court documents in the menu on the left, you will see how Honda got the field of liability greatly reduced by 1) getting the complaint changed from "excessive oil consumption" to "engine misfire" defined by only four diagnostic error codes and 2) bought out Plaintiff #2 (who owned a non-AFM [VCM in Honda-speak] four cylinder) in order to reduce the complaint to cylinder deactivated six cylinders only that had one of the four documented error codes. Great lawyering.

My only beef with the Range (maybe its a beef with me!!) is I have big feet and sometimes I bump it getting in. It threw a code once (not feet related....) on me and I had to shut the car off, pull it and wait 3 minutes and all was fine. Never happened since. My only regret was I should have done it sooner had the car for about 16 months before adding it.

I just couldn't imagine shutting parts of an engine off was good for the car and that was as important to me as the lack of drivability AFM brought. I wouldn't mind AFM if it was restricted to highway speeds say 45-50 mph and over. But it comes on at 25 mph which is ludicrous! I found that its most annoying feature........

When I had AFM active, I drove to avoid it. I believe that's why I get better MPG without it.

I use the Range AFM Delete on mine it doesn't make much difference that I can tell fuel wise but sure improves the cars driveability especially around town. I'm hoping my engine will last longer by actually "using" all 8 cylinders but I really don't know about that part?

So much BS here. No 5th Gen SS ever averaged 26.5 on the highway.

I have no idea what my MPG is and really don't care all that much, bought the car for the style and the V8 Rumble. I have the Range and it makes driving the car a more pleasurable experience!

On my way to work I drive down a road that's marked at 55mph for 20 miles. If I can make it the whole way without hitting too many red lights, i'll average between 25-27
