Golf R vs 2SS

I've got a 2019 Golf R with 25k miles on it, unmodified, still under warranty. I'm considering trading it in for a 2SS 1LE. It will be my daily driver. First priority is safety, I'll have my kid in the car. Second priority is pure fun. Will I be disappointed with the Camaro? The Golf is really zippy, and with a basic ECU tune it can do 0-60 under 4 sec. It is impossible to get it to lose composure, the thing is just glued to the road. It is a great car, it makes me look like a far better driver than I am. On the other hand the Chevy sounds amazing and I might not be able to get a V8 in a few years if things keep going towards electric. My main worry is that it will feel like a boat after the golf. My other concern is that it will be too squirrelly and hard to drive fast on back roads. What's everyone's think? What are the pros/cons of keeping the golf (with a tune) or swapping it? Much appreciated!

I doubt many here will offer opinions on the Golf given most are Camaro drivers. The Camaro will not feel as nimble at slower speeds, but the faster you drive the smaller and more nimble it will become. Handling will be very different from a front wheel drive car. Visibility will be worse. Composure at lower speeds will be comparable and at higher speeds will be better.

I’ve owned and/or driven a lot of fast cars over the years, this is by far the best handling.

It just doesn't seem like those are two choices are even close to similar. It seems to me you'd learn very heavily toward one or the other. Camaro every day and twice on Sundays. I'd never consider a Golf.

Safety? Check the crash ratings and decide for yourself. Fun? Camaro is a blast to drive. V8 torque and hp galore. Glued to the road? Check, like it's on rails. 2SS 1LE feels like a boat? No. Learn about the Alpha chassis and 1LE package. Squirrely? See previous answer.

Your questions indicate you don't know much about 2SS 1LE, and already have bias. So keep your VW. It has a better backseat/rear storage, great for diaper bags, strollers, groceries, etc. Plus it won't terrify your significant other/baby with it's sound, g-force handling, and quickness to superior top speed.

Finally? Bird in the hand. It's entirely possible that you won't be able to find a 2SS 1LE before production ends.

I agree with the above reply but in my opinion you will enjoy the Camaro more but it’s your decision to make.

If you are not going to step up to at least a manual ZL1, just keep the golf R.

The golf R is all wheel drive.

The Golf is my first "fun" car and I have no experience with anything faster. I'm doing my research now and will probably rent a Camaro for a couple of days before making a final decision. The Golf is definitely "practical", it has good gas mileage, great interior room and a working backseat, easy to park etc. The sound of the Camaro though...

The Haldex system in the Golf R only sends power to the rear wheels when it detects slip. All other times it is FWD. This is one of the common complaints about the car, in that it is not a full time AWD system, and in many respects feels pretty much the same as the GTI.

The golf r is more tossable at low speeds and in city driving, definitely way more practical as a daily. The camaro can be daily’d but you’re giving up a lot for just better mid and high speed handling. No kid is going to be happy in the back of a Camaro unless he’s a huge car nut.

If you could swing both cars, that would be the way to go. Otherwise keep the Golf.

I owned a GTI and thought it was awesome, other than it’s exterior look. Quick, handled well, great stereo, comfortable, well built, super practical. I’m actually thinking about getting another one when I retire my truck…

With that said: The Camaro is not a family car…it’s a FUN car (my favorite so far) It’s certainly safe, but it’s one of the least practical cars going. High trunk opening with little storage, not so great sight lines, the back seat..pretty much useless. Just being honest… if I had kids, the Camaro would not be on my list unless I had something more practical to shuttle them around.

I owned a GTI and was looking at the new golf R but decided to go with the Camaro V6 convertible. I am a big fan of VW for all the reasons mentioned and in the city it is a great car and way more practical with kids but the Camaro just sounds and feels like a real sports car. We are in the last decade of real cars with big engines and nice sounding exhausts. I would get one while you still can. That was my deciding factor

Agreed. If I didn’t have my daily driver for regular use, I wouldn’t have the Camaro.

For kids, Golf R. For adults, Camaro.

The back seat in a Camaro may as well be a book shelf. So, if you do need to transport kid(s) in the back seat, you will be out of luck.

On the other hand, if you can manage without a back seat, the Camaro can generate adrenaline like no Golf ever could.

Ideally I'd keep both as suggested, but tying up ~$90k in depreciating assets probably isn't the smartest financial move. The point about this being the last few years of real cars with big engines is really convincing me despite all the good logical reasons to keep the golf.
