Compass not showing on dash.

Compass direction not showing up on dash. I also have a red error lite for OnStar on my mirror. I'm sure there related, but I have no idea where to start troubleshooting this. Thank you.

I have my gauges set up on technology and I get the compass to show up but sometimes it wont work because I have a carport but when I get on the road it seems to correct itself, you might want to try that as a start.

If you pull that fuse, does it stop all connected and tracking services?

I think so. The only negative to pulling it is the hands free microphone is also on that fuse for some stupid reason.

I would start with calling OnStar. You probably won't be able to do it by pressing the OnStar button since it's showing red, so call them from your cell phone. You will need your OnStar user name and PIN. They can then ping your car and maybe find something out.

Probably by design and not stupid by GM's standards. If they link something you wouldn't want to not work to the tracking info. fuse, then there is less chance people would disable it.

You are 100% correct, but that is a stupid "big brother" reason. I need to tear into my dash and disable the Onstar transmitter per that thread, but it's very time consuming and that's why I haven't done it yet.

Sorry I thought for sure that was going to be your problem. Maybe try disconnecting the battery for awhile and see if that reset fixes the problem...

the compass data comes from onstar's gps (not to be confused with the nav gps, which is completely different if you have in-vehicle nav). So yes, they're 100% related to whatever failure you have with your telematics module. If pulling the onstar fuse and leaving it off for the night (onstar has battery backup) doesn't reboot the module then pulling the battery wont help becaues the fuse 100% disconnects power from the unit.

If the overnight rest and reboot doesn't the issue then it looks like you're in for a dealer service appointment.

Or you could just remove the power to the rearview mirror onstar led's and not care about onstar. Who cares about a compass when you have android auto?

Or maybe the OP's free OnStar has ended and it's time to pay up.

no. Compass will still work because it's based on values from the GPS that the onstar unit is connected to (the shark fin), not the cell service (which is always working even if you dont pay....your subscription only pays for your access to your onstar, not it's connection).

if the antenna is connected, the compass will work.... although there may be a situation where the compass gets out of calibration (unable to read a decent magnetic north)...in which case driving around outside in a circle should calibrate it.

The only other way it wouldn't work is if the gps sensor is busted / antenna to telematics module is broken/disconnected, no power to the telematics module ...or the telematics module is broken.

No change pulling fuse and reinstalling

Pulled Fuse F20. Left it out overnight. Put it back in and no change. No compass showing on dash.
