Can’t wax heat extractor?

I was reading the supplemental owners manual last night and it said you can’t wax the heat extractor. Any reason behind this? It’s a painted surface. Is anyone else here waxing it? I’m about to do a full detail on my ZL1 and found that statement kind of odd.....thanks for any help!

Thanks for the response Jon, so here is a very dumb question, I am unsure if my car came with the carbon one, how can I tell? Is there a code on the door jam that tells me if I have it?

The Carbon one is exposed Carbon Fiber. Does your HE look like carbon fiber or is it just black?

If it is CF, there are coatings that work well at protecting the CF and preventing the sun from causing discoloration.

Mine spends the majority of its time in a garage but I just put a ceramic coating on my carbon one while I was doing the entire car.

IMO you can wax the exposed carbon fiber heat extractor.

I wax mine every week with my car washes; HOWEVER, it must be done a certain way:

1. I only wash with Maguiar's Ultimate Soap and water. (don't press too hard)

2. Dry with waffle cloth. (again...don't press too hard)

3. Apply Collinte 9 series wax with clean/new applicator. Its a upper mid tier carnauba wax. Note: polymer waxes may have abrasives and may not be suitable for the exposed carbon coating. Carnauba is not as strong as polymer waxes, but with a high quality carnauba, you should be ok.

4. Remove wax with a HIGH QUALITY rag. (Rag Company: Eagle Edgeless)

5. Repeat every week!!

After looking closer I do not have CF so it is just painted, I tried a very small conspicuous area first to test and it was fine....thanks everyone for the help! This forum is a great place to find information. I’ve spent more time here than driving my new ZL1 haha

The exposed carbon fiber has clear coat on it (that's what you pay for). I've used collinite on mine and it is fine. In fact I would recommend it. The mosaic black painted carbon fiber can of course be waxed like any other painted surface as well.

The info on heat extractors is referring to the plastic pieces in the hood of an SS Camaro. The ZL1 has a different hood obviously. Treat it the same as the rest of the car's painted surfaces.
