Most modern stains are water based. You're better off with soap and water than paint thinner.

You're a better person than Me. I'm on the fence here. I know I'd do a better job and the more car than a shop would. Is he cmpensating you for your time? Did he have an attitude when you told him what happened? What is the cost really? It's not just supplies. There are lots of reasons why he should have to pay. Anyone who paints or sprays their deck while someone's car is beneath them sounds like the kind of people who open their door and don't care what they hit.
