I've seen cones do pretty significant damage depending on how they are hit. The bottom part is hard. If it gets kicked up into your car it can do damage. Ive also seen front ends get cracked from cones. It a pay to play thing. If you are worried about damage, you probably shouldn't participate.

Meguiars Cleaning Wax is what I use to get off the marks. Works great.
