No squeal but stepped on the break and had problems with it the short distance just down the road.

To be fair, the lighting is making it look as though the actual caliper itself has lost some material and looks physically thinner in the highlighted area. If you are saying it is fine then it is just an illusion from poor lighting/shadow in that area. If you mess with the lighting you can see the caliper is still thick there.

Either way I would still replace the rotors, but not my car.

Same break job done anywhere and if it’s resurfaced material is lathed off the rotor making it thinner. But people are going to try starting shit here...

Go piss away more money on a car with a realistic blue book value of $5,000

Pads are already replaced and the shit works. And tell me again where someone inspects breaks? They don’t

I pulled a good serviceable set of stock rotors and pads off of my SS and installed a set of Powerstop Extreme pads and rotors just because.

Just because I like to stop.

All I can do is shake my head and offer a good ‘ol southern “bless his heart” to the OP.
Amen.

I took better care of my old $700 1997 Cavalier Z24 Winter beater.

In NY it is a law. If im paying $21 for an inspection then I don't have to waste time checking for safety issues. Some shops don't check but I will let them do it for that price.

Brakes
At least one front wheel must be removed to inspect the brakes.

Brake pedal reserve - brake pedal must have 1/3 reserve
Brake pedal fade - brake must hold for one minute without fading
Power brake unit - check for proper operation
Brake master cylinder - check for leakage and proper fluid level
Disc brake pads - check condition
Drum brake linings - thickness of linings must be at least 1/16 inch on bonded linings or at least 1/32 inch over rivet head on riveted linings, with no loose or missing rivets or lining
Brake drums and/or rotors - check condition
Wheel cylinders and/or calipers - check for leakage
All brake lines and hoses - check for leaks, cracks, chafing, restrictions, and improper support
Parking brake - check for components and function
Brake equalization - test vehicle for a straight stop without significant wheel pull

These are at least 30k miles past squealing. There's a piece that makes a squealing noise on them, needless to say this one's is LONG GONE.

Don't brake pads usually have backing plates on them though?

From the pic of that caliper, it looks like there is no brake pad there at all. It looks like there are just remnants of the pad material stuck on the rotor or the aluminum scrapings from the caliper itself.

Well yeah of course, but I was only commenting on the caliper itself. Without a backing plate/pad those calipers had to take some sort of damage, as the caliper itself became the new brake pad. I was just trying to see if the shadows in the picture made the caliper look worse than it is. The shadow makes it look as if the caliper at that point is only a few mm thick. Either way that shit is a mess.

Why put money into a 5k value car?

I'm somewhat at a loss as to why you are here on Camaro5 where everyone takes pride regardless of the dollar value of their car. But it certainly looks like it truly was driven like it was stolen.
And the corrosion on the wheels tells me all I need to know.
