ZL1 1LE is indestructible: Goodyear SC3R and ZL1 1LE Durability

I wanted to put together this thread because I will be uploading a lot of video from my track outing yesterday and I found the answers to a lot of questions that people have been having regarding tires and how much abuse the car will take.

Yesterday began with the car in the following state:

1) Fresh oil change
2) Supercar 3R tires with 2 track days on them (225 miles) and about 1,500 street miles. See my other thread with the pics and my concerns.
3) 90*F ambient temps
4) Track Camber

For the track day I did 6 full sessions and then had two hours of open track time.

1st session: Sighting laps - matched my fastest laptimes from the last time I was here: 1:16-1:17s. Set cold pressures to 28psi.

2nd session: Tires coming in, set a new PR of 1:14.x but the Track Addicts app didn't record laps this session -- just total time elapsed. I got it working later on but for this session I used a stopwatch when watching the video and ran that about mid way thru the session. *Note: I was already faster on 2 day old SC3R than the Michelin PS4S which are also a fantastic tire.

3rd session: Quite a bit of traffic. It was hard to make clean laps. Best time: 1:15 -- still very quick.

4th session: Quite a bit of traffic but matched my PR with a 1:14.7. Tires going strong.

5th session: First session after lunch. Feeling sluggish and the heat was getting to me. 1:16 was my fastest. I started to wonder if the tires were done at this point too.

6th session: Again in the 14s with a 1:14.8 Now the tires were really starting to impress me. Tread was nearly completely gone on the inner and outer tire but they were still hooking up and slides were controllable. I was well over 100 miles on track and Advanced pace. In fact, only a handful of guys were faster than me. A Porsche GT3 RS, a Norma M30, a Camaro SS believe it or not hahahaha, a fully prepped C5 Corvette Racecar, and a silver prepped C5 Corvette.

OPEN TRACK: I wanted to really push the car and see how much it could handle as far as heat is concerned and also if the tires would become undrivable. After filling the tank I went out for a 45 minute session and logged about 33 laps (not including the "In" and "Out" laps) in the 1:14-1:16 laptime range. The car never overheated and the tires never went off. Amazing. In fact the temps were very stable and not even close to becoming an issue. Video will be posted of this run at some point later on this week. The gas tank was empty when I pulled in.

I took a break for about 30 minutes. Fueled up and headed back out for a 30 minute session. I completed another 21 laps not inluding the "In" and "Out" laps. The tires were nearly done at this point and I still managed to knock another tenth off and set a new personal best of 1:14.6. Even down to nearly nothing the SC3Rs were still capable of hitting very fast laps. I always thought guys were exaggerating when they said these things will grip to the cords. They were not lying.

At the end of the day I inflated the tires to 35psi and drove 175 miles home. I woke up this morning and saw the left front tire was corded on the outer edge of the tire. I have not inspected the inners. I don't want to push my luck but I drove the car to work this morning and will likely change the tires tonight. I will definitely take pictures of the wear and post them up.

I have tons of video. I used both the PDR and my new GoPro Hero 10. I will need to buy some ND filters because the sun affected the video quality to some extent but it is enough to get the idea.

All of the videos will be posted in this thread. The first video will be viewable at this link (2nd Session):

...The Norma M30 was a sight to behold. He was 11 seconds a lap faster than me.

Rob Lombardi's C5 Z06 built by PHOENIX He was 3-4 seconds a lap faster than me

Cool to see. A couple of quick questions though:

What track was this?

What was the ambient temp/humidity?

What oil temps did you get up to?

Awesome post, thanks for your insights. Sounds like a fantastic time on track and the tires stuck with you the whole way. Any brake fade with those long sessons? What fluid are you running?

Looks like NJMP - Lightning. OP mentions 90 degree ambient temps. Curious about oil temps too, although I don't worry about high temps. I typically see 275 degrees in my telemetry which, at first, worried me, but after reading around a bit -- it seems the car is designed to tolerate and operate at those oil temps.

Here's a screengrab from Cosworth Toolbox from a session at NJMP - Thunderbolt a few weeks ago:

New Jersey Motorsports Park - Lightning

It was 90*F with 54% humidity.

I'll have to check my oil temps in the data but it the car never went into limp mode and everything appeared to be fine. The oil life was 98% when I started the day and I finished the day around 52%.

If I were willing to change tires at the track, the Hoosier A7 would be a great choice.

Sweet thread!!! Cool info. I think I saw it's been said those tires outshine (at least) the old SC2s in running for longer, rather than for a couple hero laps before overheating or whatever.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I agree - the ZL1/1LE is tremendous on track. I have yet to hit NJMP Thunderbolt as my home track is Summit Point Main. Hopefully sometime this year.

In case you haven't done this already -

You can actually take the backrest (of the rear seats) off and with that - you can actually vertically stack 3 tires (1 Front/2 Rear) in the back. You can put 1 Front in the Trunk.

This way no need for a trailer to/from the track.

Session 3 is uploading to YouTube now. Should be ready in a few minutes. I went to absolute War with a Camaro SS. We both were getting sideways. It was hellacious!

Very nice. Thanks for the info. How do your tires look after this session?

I'll take some pics of them this evening after work. They're done. lol

I've heard of the inners cording with negative camber but my outers are showing the cords.

I think my only feedback for you would be your camera positioning. It's really difficult to see the road and your line with where it's mounted. It seems like the camera is mounted at the bottom of your helmet or something. I'm not super sure.

Was that SS stock? I would have expected you to really gain in that high speed section. From the video, the cars looked pretty equal.
