I actually used the same exact oil. I'm going to my 5w30 MST next week and will see if I can tell any difference there. When I put fresh 0-40 ESP in, that's when the engine didn't rev as quickly and it even sounded more "muted".

Anyone who hangs out on Bitog will tell you that Redline is one of the thickest oils on the market. Their 30 is closer to the viscosity of most 40's. While it won't flow as well, especially in cold climates, it can make things feel a bit smoother.

In a car I no longer have, I consistently noticed that the engine ran just a little smoother immediately after doing an oil change than it did before. Same oil, same viscosity.

I use euro Castrol Syntec in all my cars and makes the engine run smoother than the stock oil.

Without some kind of way to quantify the change in a scientific(or heck, semi-scientific) manner, it's hard to say if it's a placebo or not. I personally vote yes.

Just use a reputable oil of the right viscosity, and that's all there is to it.

I'm betting the European Formula 0-40 Mobil 1 is identical to the 0-40 ESP.

Not a placebo.

I changed over from mobil 1 ESP 0W-40 oil to Royal Purple HPS and I actual heard the valve train quiet down when the RP oil was introduced to the top of the engine.

The Royal Purple HPS oil has more zinc/phosphorus anti-wear additives in it to reduce friction unlike the mobil 1 ESP which is designed to keep the cats protected. Emission System Protection (ESP).

I suspect the guys who have felt a difference in engine smoothness or idle have put a higher level of zinc/phosphorus oils in their engines and were not aware.
