I change every 5000 miles. Each track day=1000 miles.

Fuel dilution isn't that big an issue where just past 3k you need to change look at UOAs. Oil level should periodically be checked in any case.

We have 10 quarts of oil not 5, so 5k intervals at the very least should not be an issue for 99% of people. Though fuel dilution can be exacerbated by short trips (engine not coming up to temp)

If you are worried get a used oil analysis (UOA) done, it's 25$ for chepeast test or $35(w/TBN) at Blackstone

1 UOA is equal to 1000 expert opinions.

I really hope you change it before the track and after the track. The owners manual says on track day you should be using 0W40 and normal driving 5W30.

True on the UOA. Though, fuel dilution and tracking is the only reason I would suggest changing oil at anything even close to 5k miles if you're using full synth, it should be fine for much longer intervals than that. Oil filters are another matter.

I change somewhere between 3500-5000 miles on my V6 due to the oil smelling strongly of fuel long before the oil is well used enough to blacken like in my previous camaro's using the same exact oil. I do have 4.5 quarts less oil than the V8, but also 2 less cylinders squirting fuel. I'd think the v8 should easily be able to do 5k before fuel in the oil becomes an significant issue. Plus if you're blowing oil into your intake and having to add oil ...should be even better for the oil quality.

Considering the very crucial role that oil plays in the internal combustion engine, increasing the frequency of oil changes can't be anything but good. While there is always the possibility of factory parts failing, poor oiling will absolutely make good parts fail quickly.

Add that the technologies, VVT and DOD are dependent upon regulating the oil pressure to operate, oil plays an even more critical role. Now, with DI and dealing with higher chamber temps and pressures, not to mention that the oil is squirted directly on the back of the piston for a cooling effect in the LT1, the demands put upon the oil are to the extreme.

In summation, the cost of changing the oil too frequently is much cheaper than the risk of not changing it enough. In this engine, considering it is DI, vvt, dod, along with a self containing air/oil separator built into the PCV system, 3000 mi seems like a reasonable number to me.

If you have any doubt whether or not your oil change regimen is working, get oil Analysis done. I've used Blackstone for years, but the Amsoil analysis is great too. I tend to do oil analysis on most things every other oil change on motors that are well broken in. Anything else is just guessing.

I believe the TIME between oil changes is just as important as mileage. I only drive about
4,000 miles a year now, so I change the oil at least every Spring. I've done 12 changes in
the last 8 years with only 47,000 easy miles on my '10 SS. Cheap insurance.

amsoil 25,000 miles Im a dealer and have been for over 10 years, Everything I own runs Amsoil. I change the oil once a year in all my vehicles. Your dealership is full of idiots in my opinion. My motorhome did 2 cross country trips and countless nascar races last year, when I had the oil analyzed it was still full of life with 22,000 miles in one year, yes I put 22000 miles on my motorhome in one year. AMSOIL is even in my weedeater.

I'm with you. I am also an Amsoil dealer, though I don't mention it here as I don't want it to seem like I am soliciting business. I also run Amsoil in everything I run. When I was a preferred customer, prior to completely switching over, I had oil analysis run for a few different vehicles, with and without Amsoil. The differences convinced me. I run one of their bypass filter systems on my company diesel truck and their oil is in everything down to the smallest dirt bike and generator. Great stuff.

Methinks your dealer is trying to make some extra $$ off of you!

I change mine around 6,000 miles and use Valvoline full synthetic. Yes I agree with some of the replies that oil doesn't need to be changed every 3,000 miles because of the additives and the way oil is refined now.

5000 miles (or 2/3 of the "normal interval") is probably a good approximation for driving that falls more in line with "severe service" - which could easily be the case if you do lots of short hops or a significant amount of "enthusiastic" driving (that still stays well short of road course track time).

The owner manuals for some cars specifically mention 5000 mile oil change intervals for severe service and 7500 miles for "normal".

I like mbar's suggestion that a single track day counts as 1000 miles . . .

I do it easy and lazy

First change at 500 miles
Second at 2,000
third at 5,000, and then every 5k after that (I am too lazy for math, so it's easy to remember to do it on the 5's and 10's)

I have a lift so it's easy, and probably overkill in the beginning but its my car lol
