Z/28-Common Problems?
Hello guys!
I'm looking into purchasing a 2015 Z/28. It would obviously have to be used, I will be looking at cars that have between 0- 18,000 miles. I just wanted to know from Z/28 owners what are important things to look for and what are known problems for Z/28 long term. I plan on keeping this car till I croak. (I'm 22). Little things like pad replacements, oil changes, etc will be done by me. However more tedious work would have to be done by professionals. I plan on also purchasing a daily since I want to refrain from putting extensive miles and reduce risks in general. I don't plan on tracking the car more than 4 times a year either so I will not be pushing it that often (do not ask then why buy a z28). I do plan on modifying the car buy putting in FBO. Thanks again guys, Gabe. |

Common issues with Z/28? With all sincerity, there really isn't any 'common' things to look for. Check the rotors/pads for abuse, check for regular maintenance (as you would with any car). I guess the only thing that sticks out in my mind is the paint on the fuel rail covers that say "Camaro" and "427" peels...thats about all I can think of. The 5th gen was 'nearly' free of defects by 2015. I bought mine sight unseen, shipped it form Houston, TX to Michigan..without worry.

The most common problem on the Z/28 is there are not problems.
Mine has been rock solid as well - not one issue to date. |

Just bear in mind you will hear all kinds of noises from the rear end to the transmission but all this is normal because of no insulation

If you aren't tracking exclusively, make sure you get a good set of tires that aren't Trofeos. It seems most dealers install Bridgestone S-04's. Try to steer away from that only because they are a harder compound and don't last that long. I 10000000% vouch for the Conti Extreme Contact Sports, as does my local track. Love these tires.
If you do not have access to a lift, you will need the long set of race ramps, as well as the extensions to get the car in the the air so you can work on it. Definitely put the skipshift eliminator in. You have to be urgently, extra specially careful when removing the wheels so that they do not catch on the rotors when you want to rotate/swap pads etc. Also, make sure you are familiar with the costs. OEM pads and rotors are extremely pricey. If you rarely track, you won't have to worry about the rotors as much as they should last a VERY long time, but pads can get up there for a set. 100% truth on the peeling paint on the covers. I just took them off as they retain heat. I have debated getting them repainted and cutting slots and adding mesh so that heat can escape. Other than that, you will just need to get used to the rear end noise at low speed, like everyone else says. It still bothers me every now and then, but it is what it is. Best car I have ever owned, hands down. Also the safest car I have ever had. I have never once felt out of control, even in pouring rain. I have tried, and failed, to get the wheels to lock up in PTF 5 on wet road, with puddles and couldn't do it. Also, don't worry about the mileage AS much. Mine had 43k on the clock when I bought it, and I have put over 4k on it now since October. Paid $36k for it. If you are concerned about chips, scratches etc.. just know that, no matter what you do, the track is going to ruin that ideal lol. |

I haven't read or heard about any "common" problems with the Z/28. I have 11000 miles on mine and it has never skipped a beat.......just a rock solid car top to bottom......and the MOST FUN car you'll ever drive!

Wasn't there a problem with the valves on some of the 7.0L?

LS7's have widely documented valve / valve guide issues. How many Z's are affected by this, I'm not sure, but it was an issue for Z06's for a while.
Only other 'problem' is that I don't have one in my garage

This is along the lines of this topic.
I've been noticing what sounds like valve tick or maybe lifters in that 2-3k rpm range. Is that normal? I called my local Chev dealer and the service advisor said that sounds normal for the car but I'm skeptical. Any suggestions? |
