200k Camaro headgasket replaced

Good morning everyone,
Have a 2011 2lt Camaro with 200k miles (yup, lots of highway driving and endless joy rides), and looks like i'm in uncharted waters for this one. I was driving home on a hot 100 degree day been noticing that my temp seemed to be a little high (had AC on and was in a little traffic, but was moving at a good speed), say 232 (before the stat kicked in and it lowered back to ~225). All of a sudden I hear the alert bell sound and say the temp was too high (the temp was pegged on High), pulled over and everything looked fine, fan was on, no leaks, etc. To make a long story short had my shop replace the water pump and stat (both looked clean and new yay .) but when that didn't help they checked for a bad headgasket and sure enough it came out positive. The car never ran hot was always cool (within its range) so I was a little surprised. After doing some research I found that in Maryland there have been 7 cases of 2011 V6 Camaros one at 55 and the other 6 having mileage in the 100k+. Finally, this morning I heard back from my local shop that is repairing the car and sure enough there was a small leak on the passenger side. Just wondering if anyone else have heard of a similar issue.

Never hear of the Head Gaskets failing. You may be in uncharted territory at 200k+.

Just curious, How long did the timing chains hold up?

Nice to see those high miles. I'm curious as well about the timing chain. I'm around 136k, no trouble so far.

No trouble yet on the chain. But I would assume that they should be good till about 300k. This is the first major problem Ive had with the car besides regular checkups. But. on the Brightside she still looks good for a 200k car lol

You must have a 2011 that was made after they beefed up the chains haha. But regarding your head gasket, never heard of them leaking before.

Haven't seen any yet, if you haven't had overheating problems before it's a bit strange. 232 seems pretty high, in fact 225 is too high compared to my engine. my coolant temp never goes about 190.

just make sure you go to a good shop, if you haven't then you should change out radiator hoses, thermostat, radiator cap. make sure there's nothing else causing overheating that made the head gasket go bad in the first place

I got 94k on mine with an ipf supercharger and im still on the stock timing chain as well as stock gaskets..i have always changed the oil at 3k miles and always ran good oil.. thats what i was told that causes the timing belt issue was not using a good oil and going over the recommended miles..

Seems to be the solution for the 10's, 3k oil changes like I always did on previous cars.

For me that is about 10 months driving (not bad).

yup 2011, I heard a lot about that model year having gasket issues around 90, 100k and 150k. We a few Camaro in that model year have issues, hope to get her back this week, the shop is treating me very well just waiting for everything to be put back together

Depends on the car. Headgaskets on our 2004 Land Rover are considered a maintenance item about every 80K miles. Ours lasted about 100K miles. Usually its best to replace both sides rather than just one since the engine tear down cost is high. Its also not a bad idea to get the heads checked for worp, and finally you may want to get the valve guides replaced.
