Vibration above 80mph - New driveshaftshop install
Ever since I installed a new 1 piece aluminum The Driveshaft Shop driveshaft back in October, I get vibrations when going over 78mph. Happens in 5th and 6th gear, clutch in or out as well.
I removed the heat shield between the driveshaft and exhaust, still vibrating. I did the 180 degree rotation on the differential side but that didn’t fix anything. I then installed a new GM ZL1 transmission mount to see if that was the issue, still vibrating. I checked all bolts and everything is torqued to spec. Clearance is good through the driveline tunnel. No rubbing. I called their support today and was told I have to pay to ship it to them to see if the balance is off or if the CV is damaged. The part that makes me upset is they said it will take 6 weeks to get it back! History: First driveshaft arrived damage without any conversion plates and no hardware. Sent it back and they shipped a new one. The new one was missing the hardware kit. Called them back and they had to then ship that separately. So after 6 weeks I finally got what I thought was a good driveshaft, but instead it vibrates above 78mph. This is all very frustrating. I wrote this to see if anyone else has had a similar experience or may know why it’s vibrating at those speeds. I’m guessing I will just need to suck it up a ship it back to them. I would think a $1,000 part would come in perfect condition, with better packaging, and all the pieces with it. Ugh!!!

It has to be balanced with the billet adapter plates, and those have to be clocked correctly to the driveshaft at install. I have a DSS 3.5" 1pc aluminium on my car, and I had a vibration after install. On inspection, we found we had missed the clocking markets on one of the billet adapters. Adjusted that and the vibration is essentially gone. I still can feel it just a little bit once and a while at just the right speed, but it's extremely minor.

I made sure that the lines they drew to balance the driveshaft to the adapters were lined up, BUT, the lines on the adapter line on the differential end was not lining up. The shaft can only go one a certain way since the holes are not in a square pattern on the adapter. So I tried both ways and get the same vibration. I told DSS about this and they said since their adpaters are CNC machined, that it doesn't really matter.. such a pain, cause I would think that it would matter, but im no expert.

There is a slip joint on the transmission end of the driveshaft and there is a measurement range for the driveshaft slip joint that can be checked. If the shaft length is incorrect it can stress this joint.
The installation instructions should show this measurement. |

Just shipped the driveshaft back to DSS. Cost me $188 to ship via UPS! I’m not happy that I have to pay for a return when the item came to me defective. If they stood behind their product, they would cover the cost. It’s not like it worked and then developed an issue. It had vibration issues from the first test drive.
I guess I just have to eat it and hope they fix the issue.

If they find that the fault is theirs, I think you'd have a valid case to recoup your shipping costs....but customer service has gone to hell these days. It took me three weeks to get a single ring pack from TSP that they shorted me on a rotating assembly.
I've heard enough horror stories about the Driveshaft Shop that I won't ever use them or any of their products. Good luck and keep us updated on the results! |

That's crazy. I'm getting ready to order a driveshaft for a 6L90 swap myself. Any other shops besides the DSS?

Gforce! I had a good experience with them. Someone posted another selling a one piece but the yoke was aluminum and I question the strength of that at high power levels.
Full disclosure, I have a DSS shaft, but it was fine out of the box. The negative threads on DSS are what made me go with GForce axles.

I have a DSS carbon fiber driveshaft in my Twin Turbo Camaro with tall gears and it's been fine for 7 years.

Lots of guys have had great luck with DSS including me, but they seem to be struggling lately and that making customers pay to return their jacked up shaft is BS.
