It's just synthetic oil you can buy anywhere.

Go to any place that sells oil. Nearly all synthetics now have the "Dexos" stamp.

Isn't it just a synthetic blend, and not a full synthetic?

I just buy 5 qt jugs of full synthetic (either mobil1 or pennzoil platinum) from walmart for $22.

Yes, I also believe it is a synth blend, and not a true synthetic (not trying to open a debate on what a "true synth" is...). I opted to move on to RP, but would use most major full synthetics over the GM.

Dexos is only the designation similar to API, your engines listed are GDI engines, so make SURE it is not a synthetic blend as that adds to the intake valve coking issues they all suffer from. Only use full synthetic.

All that makes a difference while under warranty is that you buy an oil that's dexos approved. I buy the cheapest dexos approved oil for my wife's '15 Cruze, and use Mobil 1 in the Camaro (which happens to be dexos approved as well).

Yeah, opening the oil debate will just turn into a shit storm.

here is a list of approved dexos oils, not just the dealer brand
http://www.centerforqa.com/dexos-brand1/

they have additives that GM decided are needed to maintain your warranty

Didn't mean to open up a debate, just a firm believer in getting full-synth in these cars and letting OP know that the GM stuff is a blend.

Its all good. this is my 3rd ls engine and have maintained a few hundred through the years. I like semi because it seems to not burn as much oil between oil changes. I noticed this a while back with a customer with a fleet of 6.0 chevy trucks that are used to transport auto glass. They would supply the amsoil 5-30 and go 15000 between oil changes and they ALWAYS came in 2-3 qts. low. I ran some regular run of the mill dexos 5-30 (private label sure guard) in a few of them just to see and they were never low coming in.

The factory Dexos oil that is in my Green Flash is a blend of synthetic and Dino oil. They pay for it and do the oil changes, it's fine with me.

If/when the time comes that I start doing my own, I will change it over to fully synthetic Mobil One.

He's got a '15 SS - don't think that's GDI, is it? That's 2016 that went to GDI

I use Dexos 1. GM is changing Dexos to full synthetic.
