A water softener takes the metals out off the water. However the softer leaves sodium behind. So the water spots from hard water are the metals left behind, the water spots from softened water is the sodium left behind. It seems to me that the sodium is easier to deal with, especially if you are towel drying as you are not rubbing metals all over your clear coat.

As the medium in the tank is only taking out sodium maybe it will last longer, however I have nothing to rely on that that would be the case.

The M3 I just sold was Estoril Blue, had to go through the BMW personalization process to get that !

I bought a half gallon of Griots Brilliant finish car wash at Oreiley's they had on sale for like 7 bucks, I used it on my 2012 RAM 2500 with just a wash mitt and a steady stream of water and I watched the water just sheet off with little to no water spots and I have some serious hard water where I live, even when I use my foam cannon on the Camaro and rinse with the pressure washer I still get the spots, but I still wipe down both vehicles regardless.

From what i've read when i was looking for ways to make my resin last longer was that the exchange in type of minerals in the water doesn't provide a meaningful benefit to resin usage rate.

Softened water obviously doesn't make a difference in the medium longevity. I got 7 washes. A couple of things. First my power washer uses 2.4 gpm, the On The Go literature says under 2 gpm for "best performance and effectiveness". Second I ran the water through the system for the foam cannon and the rinse.

I have a medium refill on order and will try different methods going forward. First will be to do the entire wash and rinse with softened water through the power washer then a finally rinse with water through the On The Go treatment through a hose with a sprayer. Hopefully that will work well and get me a lot more washes before needing a refill.

At $11 per wash you are probably better off going to the coin op wash and using their spot free rinse.

Not as much fun as doing it at home.

I also am hoping my revised method will get a lot more washes.
