AWE Catless system sound - got what I'm after.

So after a lot of research, I went for the AWE resonated Touring system, mated to a a set of TSP 1 7/8" Long tubes, hollowed cats.

Jesus wept it's loud!!

120db on cold start and 112db at 3.5K - Bang goes any track days with noise limits!

To be fair, I was more concerned about the rasp and tone - actually stopped me putting my foot down WOT if that makes sense, it was obnoxiously loud - and moreso the tone. If you like the rasp of an E46 BMW M3 then you'll love it. But this isn't a straight six.

However, the cruising characteristics upto 2-2.5K were eminently liveable: A little louder than stock but no drone.

So more research was needed. I'd had great results with the Magnaflow resonated X-pipe on a previous car and had seen a recent post here, however decided to try a couple of additional in-line resonators, right before the mufflers.

Yes, it's still loud on cold start. But not as loud ( yet to noise test) and settles down to a far more pleasing low tone quicker. It may be a placebo effect but when driving, it feels smoother. it's still loud (God is it loud) but only went I want it to be - cruising is now as quiet as stock albeit with a lower tone.

So overall, I'm super pleased. The resonators were made by a company called Powerflow here in the UK and I even asked them to re-weld the AWE brace. Not just a nice touch but the base for my next project - a diffuser extension to fill the void left by the suitcase.

Just went through this myself. 2” ceramic coated Dynatech headers, 3” cats, AWE resonated Touring catback. Brutally loud! I added a 3” dual in/out Magnaflow muffler, fits right up into the tunnel near the back of the driveshaft. So much better, probably knocked 10 decibels off. Check out Sakudog’s thread on it if you’re still looking to tone it down more.

I had a similar setup (LT's, catless, AWE resonated touring catback). I had to go back to the stock muffler. Now I am intrigued about the ability to quiet it down enough.

Can you post pics of your modification with the Magnaflow muffler?

Sure, I’ll try to remember to grab a pic tomorrow and post it up. Feel free to PM me a reminder if I forget.

Here you go. Sits at the back of the driveshaft tunnel and ties right back into the AWE catback.

Edit: it keeps posting the pic upside down... sucks to get old. Lol

You guys need some proper tools on the computer, too, not just in the garage

Thank you for posting that! Install looks very clean from this angle, almost like this muffler was made for the AWE catback. What model # Magnaflow unit did you use again, and are you satisfied with the sound now? Is it still ridiculously loud on cold start?

It is Magnaflow 12469. It’s much better now, it was just insanely loud before. I’m taking the high flow cats out at the advice of my tuner, so we’ll see. But cold start was tamed down significantly. Cruises quietly, but sounds good when you get on it.

I went the Borla Stype catback route. Then got the kooks headers man it was race car loud . Plus I wanted a deeper tone. So I threw in the Borla resonator and it made it perfect IMO .

Did you have a chance to hear it without the headers? I have another year on my warranty, so headers will have to wait. You mentioned the resonators made it deeper in tone? Many of the reviews say the Borla S Type and Atak systems are raspy as opposed to the old school Hooker headers and Thrush mufflers. With these new motors, many say the old school sound is very difficult, if not impossible, to recreate? Thoughts?

I ran my Borla Stype catback for a season before I added headers. It sounded good not raspy to me at all. With headers and Borla resonator it sounds almost the same tone but louder for sure
