DAMN-Important?

So I did a differential fluid change.
The lil rubber washer must’ve fallen out during cleaning.
Of course it’s the drain plug.
Will it leak?
OK to leave it out till next change?
ALSO
The plugs had a decent amount of magnetized dust.
No metal pieces just a thick amount of goop.
That NORMAL?
Its last pic

You don't need a new gasket or crush washer.

Teflon tape the threads, or spin the threads in some gasket maker. If you use a
gasket maker, let it set before putting the gear oil in. I just did mine, and I actually
reused the washers, but wrapped the threads in Teflon tape. NO LEAKS.

I had a 2003 Silverado, the oil plug leaked. I just spin the threads on some sealant,
wait a half hour, good to go, never leaked. Yes, you can buy new stuff, but when
you pull the plug and then realize you need it, it's too late... So, that worked, so I
just kept on doing it that way.

30 minute Gasket Maker is great!

My take on this is you discovered the seal AFTER you installed the plug and filled diff. Yes, it may cause a nuisance leak after driving around. Clean out your drain pan, pull that drain plug and install seal. Refill with same fluid. The magnetic munge on the drain plug you previously found is normal.

Yeah I installed the drain plug without the rubber washer. I wasn’t paying attention. Then saw the washer sitting in The oil waste tank after I had already filled the differential.

If it is not leaking, then leave it be. Keep the washer till next time.

I know that you said you found the washer AFTER, but just for future reference, and if this happens to anyone else, the top and bottom plugs are the same Part #.

You could have just put the one with the washer as the drain plug, then ordered a new one for the fill and replaced it without losing much.

As he said, he didn't notice till after it was all done, so he was not in a
position to make that conscience decision. You knowledge that in the first
sentence, then make that statement in the 2nd, like he knew the washer
was missing before installing the drain plug, to use the washer from the top plug.

Can't have it both ways.

Because he had the picture of them both out, I assumed he noticed it was missing then, but wanted to put them back as they came out. My apologies for not noticing that he noticed after they were reinstalled.

I read it as he knew it was missing but only found it after it was all put back together.

Yeah sorry for the confusion guys. I didn’t explain what all transpired that well and pics didn’t help.

I’ll save the rubber washer for next change. May come sooner as I may add a rear differential cooler.
