Question about the GM CAI Intake and "tune"

So I went ahead and bought it last night. And I know you get a voucher to have the tune. Is the tune "free" with the voucher? Or is it just telling them it is ok to tune?

Yes, I am using tune loosely.

Free. Do NOT pay for it. Some dealers will try to hit you up.

What do the dealers charge to install it (given you have to take it in for them to tune)? If doing it yourself, can it void the warranty?

This much I am pretty sure about, you can install yourself and maintain warranty. I will be doing it myself.

If you go dealer, the directions say >1 hour. So the dealer should only charge 1 hour of work. No clue what their rates are, I imagine it varies but I would guess ~$100.

Yes the tune for the CAI is included in the price of the part! A dealership will charge for an hour labor which I think is around $125.00.

The tune includes with the cost of the CAI! DO NOT pay for the tune. Maybe at most, the dealer will make you pay for labor (if somebody can confirm this for me).

Also FarmerFran, Can you report back with a follow up after the tune? I have been driving my car for roughly a year w/o the tune. I’d like to see if there are any advantages of getting the car tuned up.

But you can do it yourself and maintain warranty, right?

Not sure Fran. You could call the dealership and ask the Service Advisor. I would install it myself and then take the car to the dealer for the tune.

My plan is to do the install myself and go next day for tune. I will let you all know what I find out.

From what I have read on the forums you can do install and have them tune. The tune is only for Kali smog. No performance. Hopefully these make some power but it doesn’t appear to. Not seat if the pants feel anyway.

The tune is a recalibration for the MAF because the airflow is different with the GM CAI. Chevy doesn’t advertise any power gain. There are threads where some people claim a small gain and some claim a small loss. I tried the white “race” filter at the track and didn’t notice any improvement over the standard blue filter.

This sounds right.
Flow through a tube is laminar, and the MAF sensor only samples a postage-stamp-sized area in the tube. There will be a table used to convert the MAF reading to actual mass.

Yes, there is a code that comes on the front page of the installation manual that the dealer should "charge" the tune to, this way they get paid from GM, it should cost you $0.00. You can install it yourself and the dealer should do the tune. I did this and the dealer had no problem with it. It is a GM part, sold by GM, it doesn't matter who bolts it on... It took me about 45 minutes going slowly and methodically to install it with a few simple hand tools...
