Keep in mind the seat itself can be burnt. This will cause plenty of leakage. I just ran into this with my bro in laws 347 Ford stroked.
As for the piston..... In the picture you have of the top of the piston. Look at about the 8 o’clock position, left lower side right at the cylinder wall. Is it just me or is there a Knick out of the edge of the piston? |

that slug needs to come out. if it was detonating, the rod bearings will tell the story.

take a close look. go look at it in person. that isn't piston topography.

So leak is definately still there, I filled the chamber #5 and #7 up with alcohol, #5 is fine, and #7 leaks out the intake and none out the exhaust.
I still just don't understand what could have happened here, and is the burning oil smell and the fact that I (may have or may not have) overfilled and the fact I just raised my rev limiter related? |

It looks like a chunk of metal was in there for a bit and it eventually got out

That valve looks to me like it is sitting on the seat awkward. Like it’s bent.

Burning oil smell is likely from the leak at the valve. How’s the inside of the intake look? Caked with oil?
Overfilling a bit won’t be a big deal unles it’s a bunch of oil like quarts overfilled. My ZLE has been technically overfilled a bit. Our heavy equipment at work routinely gets overfilled a lot and we don’t get burning oil smell. If you have a catch can sometimes that can cause the smell but the coincidence here is there is visual damage and I’ll bet the smell is from that leak in the valve. That valve seal could be slightly damaged from the valve being bent if it is. Also, if the intake valve is bent, this means that other cylinders can actually draw a little bit from that cylinder during the running process of the engine. |

The intake was a little more brown and wet with oil and the rest of the intakes yes, but not by much. There was also oil on the spark plug threads, but it was on every spark plug thread #1, #3, #5, and #7 I haven't taken off the other side yet.
I am missing all kinds of things, I didn't even see the damage to the squish area on the head: |

#7 is on the right, I don't see a difference on the intake manifold side, but its hard to tell. Every time I have taken the intake manifold off it has been filled with oil from the PCV system anyway. The intake port on the #7 was noticabley more oily than the rest though.
I am almost positive GM incorporated all of the E85 flex fuel durability features into the GEN V? I remember reading something about the flex fuel engines in the GEN III stuff having special intake valve seats for ethanol compatibility and durability? After endurance testing I think they were seeing some kind of failure. It looks to me like it lost a chunk of the intake valve seat and started chewing it up. |

If I could get the intake valve out I could see the seat but I swear it will not come out. I feel like I am doing damage to it beating on it like this I guess I can always by new retainers.
Is there anything else I can try to get them off? Can I apply heat with a torch? It seems like I need to apply downward force to the tip of the top of the valve spring? I would think that would help the keep disloge? |
