New Charger to lose 500#'s?

http://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/enthu...cid=spartandhp

Wow! I will definitely have to look at the new Charger if they update it to a different platform. I love the tech that the car has right now, but the old heavy platform they use is a turn off for me. Dodge is moving in the right direction in my opinion.

Oh, and we'll just have to wait until early next decade as the current model is getting a refresh for 2019.

Another refresh before the new platform is introduced?

By the time the new models are available, the current generation will be 15 years old. I have to admit that they did a really nice job keeping the models relevant despite no major changes in such a long period of time.

I loved the Stealth! Still a head turner today. Also the 3000GT is a great looking car too. Very good performance during the years they were out.

I got excited about the possibility of a 3500# twin turbo Charger until I saw that I had to wait almost 10 years. LOL Talk about a teaser. And will that keep people from buying the 2019 refresh as they wait for the lighter more nimble option to come out?

They are talking about a 2020 Charger. That's about four years from now. It's hard to get excited about a car that may not happen. Besides, reducing a car's weight by 500 pounds doesn't make it fast.

They must be waiting for all the guys that like their monstrous 2ton+ boats to die before they move on to a platform that's not so dated it's a joke. The profit margin has got to be huge on these cars at this point though. It may not matter to people if it's a conestoga wagon or not, as long as it looks like a throw back and seats 5. How many gens of mustang and camaro will have been released since those things hit the street? It may be 3.5 for ford by that time and 2 for GM.

They didn't exactly say 2020, just early next decade. If they refresh in 2019, I bet they will at least offer the current model refresh in 2020. My bet is that if this car happens, earliest will be 2022. And hey, we are car guys. We get excited about news like this.

If this car has engine options that make 500 and 700 HP and is 300#'s lighter, it will be a game changer. The 300HP TT 4 at 500#'s lighter will be a nice daily driver. I don't think it will be "fast" but it will be fun.

Thread needs to be moved to "General Automotive + Other Cars Discussion".

But yeah, the current Charger is very long in the tooth. So is the Challenger. FCA have been content so far to keep these cars relatively unchanged for a decade with minor facelifts and interior upgrades.

I read the situation as FCA doesn't have the funds to develop new platforms and are doing everything possible to remain relevant. I.e. big power, new interiors, etc. Compared to Ford or GM, FCA product looks like dinosaurs.

Like the Camaro, that much weight loss means a much smaller car too.

Maybe if Sergio ran his company like an automotive CEO should and didn't just thumb through his product portfolio and randomly yell "Stick a Hellcat in it!" all new product would get through the pipeline faster.

Don't expect that timeline to stick.

take a look at the alfa romeo giulia, this is the platform and engine they are looking at putting the charger body on. If they can pull this off, the charger will be one hell of a sedan.
