When to address traction?

Is there a good rule of thumb concerning horsepower/torque and tire width? I have the stock Goodyear runflats on my car now and they are indeed a sticky tire, but I will soon be around 500 rwhp/tq, car is an M6. Would a better tire in the stock width be sufficient? Edit: Street driven car, not drag racing but want to be able to use the power confidently.

Is the car you’re daily? My recommendation is the Goodyear f1 supercar3. It’s the stock 1le and zl1 tire and it’s designed around the platform. I still
Run it as a street tire at over 600whp. Wet traction isn’t the best but I don’t have a problem with it. A lot of people are going to mention the Michelin ps4s. It’s a great tire for what it is. Especially the wet traction. Grip isn’t as great as the Goodyear but it’s not too far behind it.

Not a daily, weekend fun car. So you are at 600whp and running stock 1LE width tires confidently? What are those widths? My SS are 275s. I’ve read a lot of great things about the PS4s, just want to be sure I don’t need a wider rim/tire.

what exactly are you doing with the car? my bolt on car does not like the sc3s much at all under 70*, it will spin from 50 mph. 1st gear is useless in all temperatures. factory tire sizes 285/30/20 front & 305/30/20 rear. i put on 275 mt et street r on a 17x9.5 wheel and the car dead hooks, from any speed. it would be a lot of fun to dig race if it wasn't so heavy.

305/30/20 rear 285/35/20 front. The Goodyear’s won’t last as long as the mps4s but they offer a lot more traction and they’re a lot cheaper. First gear is obviously lacking grip but I can confidently ring the car out. When I was at 490whp you could hook up in first gear during the warmer months.

* when i say hookup I don’t mean launching the car from a dig.

If it's just a weekend fun car then put a Nitto 555r2 drag radial on it. Nitto hit a home run with these tires for all around use. You will get the same mileage as the SC3 tires and much better traction. I doubt you notice much difference in cornering ability unless you road course.

Nitto 555 RII. A fantastic tire. Hooks well on the street and at the strip it will have you grinning.... Trust me !!!
Surprisingly good tire life as well.
As was said in the above post...Nitto hit a home run !

I love mine. Have two sets for my C7 one set of 305-35-19s for the street and 285-40-18s for the drag strip. Hooks and books every time.

Nice. What do you think about upsizing to a 285 or 295 on a stock rim?

Right now my car has Kooks headers w/ hi flow cats to full Borla exhaust, Rotofab CAI. Going with a BTR stage 2 cam next.

if you want to turn the car at all id opt for a 19 or 20" drag radial. no experience with nittos but they are heavily favored.

Aaron, cost difference from the 285 vs 295 is significant.

What air pressure do you run on the RII at the drag strip?

I run 20 psi 285s at the track and the 305s I run 28 psi on the street and that keeps the tire light from popping up on the dash.
