The % is just an indicator. You should go for an oil change but the engine will not blow up if you go a bit later.

Mine was at 33% when I got my car brand new 300 test drive miles on the odometer -- it had been sitting outside for a year though unused for the most part.. ...know what my dealer did?

Salesman: That can't be right! *resets oil life counter*....there you're good to go! Let us know if you have anymore problems!

Run it until it's 0%.

Experience 15 years in car business.

As long as you don't reset it for giggles it should be pretty accurate. In fact it always errors on the side of caution. So changing at 15% you probably still have a lot of life left in that oil.

Changing it early is not going to hurt anything. It's probably better for the engine to get the old oil out. My mother-in-law has a Cadillac with free oil changes and they told her to come in when it gets to 20%. I usually don't go over 4000 to 4500 miles.

GM Oil life % is calculated between miles and time since last change...maximum time of 12 months....i wouldnt risk resetting oil life without oil change....i could see someone going 13 months on oil (even though the mileage is less than reco oil change), having some unrelated engine failure and having GM deny warranty

I believe it says as soon as it tells you to change it do it within your next tank of gas.

Actually, its a much more complicated algorithm than miles and time like the older versions. It also looks at the trip distances, outside temps, engine loads, etc. It's really good system.

I'm old school (and just downright old). We used to change our oil every 3,000 miles or so as a rule of thumb.

On my 2013 ZL1, I've always opted to get an oil change whenever the oil monitor shows 50% oil life left, which usually is right around 3,000 miles.

This usually results in 2 oil changes per year or so.

Yes, I could wait till life drops much further and save some money, but I don't mind the cost of two changes per year. Cheap insurance.
