I wonder how far the oil temperature goes up if 2SS runs at full speed.

I own 2SS. When travelling at high speed, the oil temperature gauge will continue to point to 261.5. I don't know if it's going up further, but it's already maintained between 1 and 2 minutes at the top speed, and when it's running, the gauge seems to be staying at 261.5. I want to run more, but I wonder if the temperature rises too much. Currently, 5w30 GM stock oil is in it. Is the temperature very high?

Full speed, you mean track use? I would think the radiators and your coolant might have something more to it than the oil.

That’s the stock oil? I run 0w40 Mobile1 ESP. I thought that was the GM recommendation.

The recommendation was Dexos1Gen2 5w-30 until I think 2020. Not sure what the track recommendation was prior, but Dexos1Gen2 5w30 is still valid for non-track usage.

While that might be true, your actual usage condition (sustained high speed with oil temps in the 260F range) is pretty much what the temps get to when you track it. My SS 1LE, in non winter/cool conditions at the track runs at 272F sustained. That calls for 0W40 or 15W50 as per the owner's manual (might only be stated in the high performance owners manual supplement).

My guess is if you are running 5W-30, you are currently putting your engine at significant risk, especially if the usage at 260F is sustained. I've already lost an engine while on track, and that was using 0W40 so presumably the cause was unrelated to oil viscosity. So why add another risk factor that you can easily control?

My 19 ZL1 also saw ~270F on track regularly with the recommended 0W-40 oil. With the mid cycle refresh in 2019 came the change of the recommended on all the V8 cars to 0W-40 from 5W-30 in the 16-18 cars. Chevy also made it clear those cars can swap to 0W-40 but it wouldn't hurt to stay at 5W-30 according to them. I personally didn't enjoy the idea of those temps at all which lead to my install of a C&R oil cooler.

Like I said, might as well use the recommended oil for track use.

Thank you for your answer. I sometimes combine track and daily driving. What kind of oil would be good if I had to replace it? This is a different story, but I don't know why 16 camaro 2ss is marked '5w30 dexos' on the oil cap.

Thank you for your answer. Please share the engine oil product information that you recommend for my 2ss.

What thermostat are you running? I am running a 180 and have never seen the coolant temps above 187 and the oil temps usually lower. Trans and dif about 150.

Thank you for your reply. I've heard the same thing before. I heard from GM that I can use 5w30 for 16-18 camaro. I'm wondering if I should use a high viscosity oil.

Where are you driving your car? If you drive it on track, the oil goes to 272F and the coolant to 212-214F.

It's stock. When I travel at high speed, the oil temperature rises about 261.5. The coolant is normal. Are you in the same stock? If so, what kind of oil do you use?
